Just curious about the Olympic SpeedMaster Set

Is it worth 'investing' in? Are these limited editions that may be worth a lot in the future?

I like the white dial of the set vs the black dial of the individual watches.

I would invest in a S&P 500 every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

At least historically, the Olympic Speedmasters don't actually do particularly well investment wise. Check out the Tokyo 2020 ones, they are all about $10k, despite being $8k new. The Olympic watches tend to do BETTER than the 'normal' watches, but not enough to consider them any sort of investment. "Older" Olympic ones don't seem to hold much value.

FWIW, I LOVE my 2020 Tokyo Yellow Ring, and spent a bunch of time in Tokyo figuring out which I wanted. But I bought it because I loved it, not because it'll be worth anything anytime soon.

I do... hahaha... but at one point, because of the way i was raised, I don't hardly need more money (I like to say I'm working on my first billion, but I have well over 990 ish million to go hahaha). I am just going to leave it to my kids, though that is the case with a watch as well.

Let me just throw this out there:

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun.

I was hedging the bet with calling it an investment. The real issue is, should i buy, could I have an expectation of selling at just below that price. But I would then like to wear them. I think they look neat. I am not enamored about the olympics per se, but the dials look jamming.

I'm a huge fan of a couple of the Tokyo Speedmasters (if those are the ones you're talking about). They are at least likely to hold value if you're worried about falling out of love and wanting to get most of your money back. Unlike the 'black' and white ones, they are not likely to be worth 1/2 of what you paid right away 😀

However, I VERY much suggest you see them in person before buying. All 5 photograph WAY different than they look in person. I was fortunate to be able to see them in person because I was in Tokyo at the time (in their watch district!), and my thoughts changed a ton! My 'before' thoughts:

Blue
Red
Black
Green
Yellow

My 'after' thoughts:

Yellow(black dial, gold accents): The gold/black pops in a way that I didn't expect. The red accents contrasted amazingly. I ended up seeing this one first, and going back and buying it. The hands have great contrast, and it just looked the best to me.

Green (Silver dial, green bezel): The green/silver/gold works really nicely together. Ultimately, the contrast between silver/gold didn't really show, and the red looks somewhat bland, but this was very much my #2 after seeing them all. This had a little bit of readability issues becasue of the silver/gold not being that much different.

Red (red bezel, white dial): This one was the one that 'met expectations' the most. Note it isn't the beautiful dial of the white speedy, in that its pretty matte, but it has a great bezel contrast. The red text/seconds hand is a different color though, which was distracting. The hands had great contrast.

Black (Panda dial): I honestly expected to love this one, but again, a little bit of a 'bland' dial to me, matte dial without anything that really popped. The hands/dial didn't contrast well, so it wasn't particularly readable either.

Blue(blue dial): This one photographs fantastically, and to me, just falls flat. The blue is a bit of a 'cheap thing made in the 90s' color to me, and I just couldn't shake that. The red accents didn't go well with it, and the contrast of it wasn't great. It also lacked the 'sunburst' that you usually get out of a nice blue dial.

All-in-all, I REALLY liked all of them, and probably would have been happy with at least the 1st 3 on my final list. I would have been disappointed with the blue, and maybe the panda (with Red being 'whelmed').

BUT frankly, it is very much a case of 'they look waaay different in person than online'. Similarly, I just picked up the two-tone Sedna gold speedy after seeing the two 2-tones online. When looking online, the moonshine looked way better to me, but in person, the Sedna on strap is absolutely gorgeous and now one of my favorites.

Some LEs seem to go viral, others tank. Honestly, it's a crapshoot, not an investment.

And the fact that I would want to wear them...

One reason why I like to go on vacation frequently. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you may die. I don't spend much, generally, but I've budgeted 30k a year when I made my retirement budget while I was working (that number will go down as I age out; I'm already slowing down).

Now if my brother would just be approved for SSI, I can reduce my charity to that lazy duck and have more to enjoy or to donate...

As Jesus said, we will always have the poor. So do I need an expensive watch. No. But giving away all my money would not make a dent in the level of poverty, so I do what I can, but I think it okay to spend a little on myself. However, 34k seems like a lot. A whole lot. So it would really have to have the odds of going up instead of depreciating... haha

I hear you on certain purchases I sometimes look for some type of value retention but even that is hard to factor. As long as you ain’t puttin yourself in a bad financial spot buying a watch and you really enjoy it that’s all I go by. I ran into someone who had some very nice Rolexes, I couldn’t help but give him a compliment. He went on to tell me he purchased them all with Klarna or whatever that watch finance thing is. Between that and his car payment he was in a tight spot.

I just said well I hope things improve they are nice watches. No sense pointing out it didn’t seem like a wise move put yourself in debt for watches but I would have felt like Captain obvious pointing it out and what business is it of mine to tell someone that, especially after the compliment. We all live and learn at our own pace.

Thankfully that isn't me. I was looking at Rolex, but the wife seems to have had enough the last couple of months. Not only did I buy the moonwatch in white and black, but I bought a mickey mouse Citizen watch. It is whimsical. haha... and an automatic. But very cheap in the scheme of things. haha

I was poor growing up. Very darned careful with money (saved a lot as my wife and I were both accountants). I still have a budget so I can track expenses. Some things are going to require 401k monies to buy but that is future me... My cars are more expensive lately but even those are not exhorbitant.

It’s a pretty significant up front cost and the “investment” means you wouldn’t be able to part them out without killing any conceivable advantage to having the entire set. Basically you’re putting up 60k+ USD for a set that you’d be afraid to wear and damage and hope that in ten years you could find a buyer that would pay $120,000 for the entire set. For me, I’d rather just buy the models I’ll wear and like the most.

I don’t think these “invest” well, they would of jumped up already by now.. I really like the red one and green/gold.
