Joe Biden's Rolex, and the Farce of the 'Everyman' President

Not particularly, it is much worse where I live. In France a president was a bit bashed because he was spotted wearing a Navitimer (I think it was Sarkosy). I don't even want to imagine the noise if our current president was sporting a Rolex. A farce indeed.
I thought Sarcozy had a stainless Daytona and his wife thought it made him look low class and bought him a Patek while he was in office

These guys are wearing a Datejust worth of body armor and each carrying a Tin-tin worth of firepower....it’s all relative.
Not really...have you priced 5.56 lately? ::facepalm1::

Toilet paper wasn't the only thing being sucked into a black hole of demand lol

Bought a case of .223 a year or two ago- I almost choked when they rang it up. .22 is even insane. Watches, guns, cars- all of these hobbies cost serious money- none are holier than others- none are class based- I just hate the reverse snobbery. Don’t sneer at the trappings of wealth when your own hobbies/pastimes are just as frivolous and expensive.

In Michigan, that is completely understandable. Back when I was employed by a Tier 1 automotive supplier, all our sales people were only allowed to drive American brand cars...preferably the brand of the customer you were assigned to cover, so the Ford guy would drive a Ford, the GM guy a GM, and the pointy star guy a pointy star car...
Pointy star, eh? You must mean Mercedes, right? 😁

It brings up two interesting questions. If you were taking the oath of office for POTUS which watch would you wear? For me it would be my Apollo 8 Dark Side of The Moon out of respect for all those who worked on the mission. .
It would be my father’s B&M 18k Chrono.

in Michigan of course!!! Not as much now as Toyota has plants there. But OMG in Mi and Ohio it was blasphemous not to drive an American car.

Funny story...I have a friend and fellow watch collector who had a car GM dealership at one time. On the Chevy pick-up truck he drove everyday, he had this bumper sticker on the back (it was a common one seen in these parts about 12-15 years ago or so):

There was a lot of automotive industry in this area back then...not so much now...

For some reason he didn't put the same sticker on the 911 he kept tucked away in the garage...

A friend relocated to the Detroit area ~4 years ago to be near family. The 'Merican cars or else attitude is still alive and well in the town where her cousins live. Most of them work for Ford, and they all drive Fords. She has one as well because she gets to buy at 'family pricing.' I have known her for ~16 years now, and she replaces her vehicle every 3 years with a new Ford purchased at discount pricing. She gets rid of them before they start having too many problems.

Fun fact -- one of her factory worker cousins assembled a battery-powered car that she gave to my son when he was ~5 years old. It's the kind the kid can sit in, has forward and reverse gears, battery-powered radio, etc. It has had several failures due to assembly issues that I have troubleshot 🤦

Meanwhile in Congress...

Okay, bit dated, but you get the picture.

Strange that people get twisted up so much over what a watch a politician wears is worth, and this seems to be a particularly US thing. I think our current PM wears an IWC, and really, who cares. It's their money - they can do with it as they please.

Sadly, it is not just a US thing!! there are too many jealous and bitter people out there who think that someone’s success takes away any potential one of their own!!

Look at France, and the flack that president Sarkozy took for wearing a blingy Rolex... or when someone tried to steal his Cartier Tank off of his wrist while he was shaking hands in a crowd!! It is so bad that one of my friends takes his Porsche out at the crack of dawn, from fear of attracting too much attention in his neighborhood. Crazy but validates the French say: to live happily, live secretly. 🤦

I dated a woman about 10 years ago who’s family was very working class ‘Merkin. We went to their house for Easter brunch and when we got out of my Audi, her uncle’s first words to me were “must be nice to drive an Audi”. I paid $16.5k for my used Audi- he had a $60k Hemi truck in his driveway parked in front of his $80k camper.

To those who throw stones at Biden’s watch collection- how much does a fully outfitted AR-15 cost? We all have hobbies.

Haha that's funny and true. I remember I had my first luxury watch worth about ~$4k. My friend said I'm wasting my money and this guy buys and sells cars for fun. BMW, Land Rover, Benzs etc. It's all a matter of perception. So a guy who says you are wasting your money on a watch (that may at the very least hold its value if not increase) then boards his boat that he takes out 4 month of the year...

He should be politely heard and politely ignored IMO.

Maybe a Daytona, but I think I remember hearing about a Navitimer. Interestingly, the less showy but also pricier watch made much less noise if I recall correctly. A farce, I repeat. 😁

I recall somebody asking which is more American, a Ford made in Mexico or a Nissan made in Tennessee?

“Tennessee's sizable auto-parts sector feeds components to the transplants, including Honda, Hyundai and Mercedes in Alabama; Kia in Georgia; Toyota in Kentucky and Mississippi; BMW and Volvo in South Carolina; and Nissan in Mississippi and Tennessee.

Even as GM was reorganized under bankruptcy laws in 2009, transplants expanded. Nissan ramped up Leaf electric car output south of Nashville at Smyrna. Volkswagen launched its East Tennessee mega-complex at Chattanooga. Toyota landed the Corolla assembly line at Blue Springs, Mississippi. Kia went into West Point, Georgia. Honda scaled up a new Civic plant at Greensburg, Indiana.”

When the wife gifts a watch, you wear the watch.

On the morning of my wedding day, there was a knock at my hotel door; it was my wife’s maid of honor, who delivered a box with this in it

It was at the time literally the most expensive thing my wife had ever purchased (she at the time rented her apartment, and even still drove the truck given to her when she turned 16).

Never-mind it was not the cal.11 that I had months previous actually mused aloud about wanting one day.

I still chuckle thinking about her walking into a department store attempting to purchase this watch with opening lines like “there is some watch worn by some guy in some movies some time ago...”

Guys, your politicians are amateurs! 😗

Our ex Prime Minister was charged for corruption on massive scale for around half billion euros and wears watches shown below and that's just part of his collection 🤮

Also, our Minister of Finance wears Batman and nobody cares! 😒

In neighbor Montenegro (where Casino Royale was filmed) ex PM and president, Milo Đukanović wears Sky Moon Tourbillon, Breguet Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar and Ulysse Nardin Classic Skeleton Tourbillon! ::facepalm1::

She obviously found someone who could flesh out that description- nice gift!
The other day, my lady said she heard a song that she liked- she thinks it was by Wilco, and it goes “do-doo-do-do-doo-do-doo-do-dah-but with guitars”.
I pulled out an album and dropped the needle- “that’s it!”.
Just takes the right clues and a good detective sometimes.
