Horologically… Somewhere above Rolex/Omega and somewhere below Patek/Lange.

Their sportier watches don’t do anything for me, but as a maker of luxury dress watches, they’re the best you can do (imo) for under 15k US. Gorgeous, clean designs, brilliant integration of complications on the dial, and superb movement finishing. (There’s a reason other brands like Patek would have JLC make movements for them.)

They don’t get hyped like other brands—definitely one for those who know what they’re talking about, not those led around by social media.
I also agree with this.

"Watchmaker of watchmakers" isn't just a slogan. I have a Master Geographic and the same JLC movement can also be found in a crazy expensive AP Royal Oak...

I absolutely love the Reverso, but still find it too bad that the brand is often reduced to it. There is so much more! Especially Memovox (I have two...), Moonphase, Ultra Slim, vintage Futurematic, crazy ultra complications.

I just feel that some modern (non-Reverso) watches are let down a bit by boring case designs. Vintage JLC case designs were more interesting.

On the other hand, many vintage JLC are let down by particularly bad water resistance. You notice it when searching for nice vintage JLC -- so many have water damaged dials (or repainted).

Good morning,

Where do you put the brand?

I always liked the Reverso, it didn`t work for me in person - I just didn`t like it as a size and shape on my wirst ,however my wife is happy with her quartz one and now I am browsing the more affordable Master controls from mid `00s with the annual calendar and 37mm case.

Where do you put the JLC brand based on execution, quality and finish amongst the rest?
A photo of the model that caught my eye.Not my photo, taken from the web.
Which size didn't work for you? I don't get on with the larger models, but I have a 26x42 Grand Taille that looks great IMHO.

37mm is the optimal watch size for me

what a beautiful couple. I just got my first reverso yesterday and quite happy with that. I used to own a 18k JLC dress watch from '50 and it did keep perfect time +-5s per day.

I wonder why doesn't JLC has a dedicated sub-forum here 😀

I'm enamored with JLC... their designs, quality and history all sing to me. At times, my collection has held both a Compressor and a Reverso Grand Date GMT.

Despite my fondness of the brand, these two examples did not spend much time in the watch box. Not sure why...but perhaps the having is not nearly as satisfying as the wanting.

Still, I'm always on the lookout for the JLC that survives my fickle taste.

Sometimes, an understated design can be very elegant.
Dammit, man. Every time you post a picture of that watch I start thinking about what stocks I want to liquidate.

I had these one. Really cool watch, everything was great about it. I am still thinking about a Reverso or a MUT moon, that on my wishlist.

I have a 976, it is my most loved watch in my collection.

JLC as a brand is up there, having made watches for the likes of Patek, VC, AP and Cartier.

One of the owners of JLC back in the day were on the board for Patek.

As far as watchmaking goes, JLC is on point.

As far as sports watches go like the master compressor, not for me but we are all different and it would cater to some.

Love JLC, don't own one, but often admire them on C24. As someone said above, the Master Control line is the one. Tried one on at JLC boutique in BKK back in the 00s and was blown away. Just sad I didn't have the money then to buy, but definitely a good bargain now for watches from that era

Not that this should determine anything, but for those who might care, I sense that JLC is a good brand for men looking to purchase watches that women will admire. I say this based on extensive research using a data sample-size of 1.

My wife, inasmuch as she can be bothered to think about watches at all (she doesn't wear one, or really any jewelry, for that matter), sees Omegas as 'boys' watches'---lots of steel and black and bezels and tool-ish complications, and emphases on space and auto racing and deep-sea diving. It is all indeed very little boy playing with his vroom-vroom toys kinda stuff. Not to say she doesn't appreciate some of the brand's dressier pieces, but even those I think she finds ungainly.

She'd much prefer I wear something simple from JLC, like what @gbesq posted above: thin, leather strap, white dial, stick markers, single sub-dial. It's still masculine (whatever that means), but it just exudes taste and class and elegance.
+1

I have the same experience with my wife. She doesn't care about most of my watches but when I wear my reverso she'll comment that it's nice. If only she could get me to upgrade my wardrobe to match.

And my kids notice it for the cool "flippy trick" it can do.

I'll have to take some newer pictures when I can.

I really respect JLC. I have been considering getting a Black Polaris for my upcoming 40th Bday. I feel like they really are a good value for the money right now, and I've never seen one in the wild. They seem to be in class above Rolex and Omega, in my opinion.

Their breadth is astounding. They are generally recognized for their more simple (yet still well executed) models, but they also make some marvels of horological engineering

The value of the black Polaris Date on the secondary market is incredible. They go for like 1/3 of a list price and price-wise not far away from Omega Seamaster. I really dont understand why people dont like these models. This is by far one of the most comfortable watches i own. Some reviewers (e.g. Fratello) stated in the past that they wear larger than the 42mm which is total BS. They probably mean visually the dial seem large due to small bezel.

The position of the crowns makes wearing better as they integrate into the case and dont dig into your arm. Short lugs also make the watch sit comfortable on the wrist.

Some people lack the screw down crowns. I feel for the daily use more practical not to have to unscrew the bezel crown to set the timer. Lack of threads also means cheaper servising. As one can just replace the crown without the need of replacing the threaded crown tube.
And i had no problems going into water for the past 4 years.
