IWC Ingenieur - Amazing or Ingenuine Genta?

See what I did there? I love Genta's porthole watches, and definitely want one (or more) one day... but at this point, my price range can't afford the Royal Oak or Nautilus, so I'm looking @ this:

So what do we think, worth getting to fill my Genta void - or an ingenuine recreation?

It's lovely but not what you really want is it? Wait. Save. Look. Jump.

I would wait and save up for it. A Royal Oak (Ref. 5402) is also my grail watch, and I looked into the IWC Ingenieur as well. If you just buy it, because you don't want to wait for the grail watch, you will end up wasting money and not really enjoying it.

An other Option would be to go for other designs of Genta.

@mondodec Essay about Omegas designed by Genta is a great read, I would highly recommend it.

Maybe a Omega Constellation Ref. 14900 could be something to look into.

Thanks for the info and thoughtful response! Will absolutely read the essay. I like this IWC (knowing its more "inspired" by Genta than directly designed) maybe 3rd behind the Nautilus and Royal Oak - not a huge Constellation fan, nor BVLGARI. If money was no object - I'd be getting this quartz Rolex 5100 Texano - Genta designed; ever see this before? https://www.chrono24.com/rolex/quar...ntage-ref-5100-oro-bianco--id7934121.htm#gref

I have not researched to see if it is actually Genta or not but it is still a lovely watch. I just missed one in an auction a while ago and regret not going that bit higher, since then a seller on WUS desribed the bracelet on one version as the best he has ever known. Personally I cannot justify having so much $$$ tied up in one watch so an AP is not feasible for me, so my view is go for it.

Yea, honestly I JUST saw this black reference a few days ago... previously I didn't know it really existed and was focused on the similar white version below. It is my understanding Genta didn't directly design these, but its heavily influenced by his work - in the best ways! Wish they were a little cheaper, but a stunner for sure... its in my consideration set for sure.

My understanding is that Genta did design the Ingenieur in 1976. At least this is widely reported by many experts, and I haven't really seen people cast doubt on it. Perhaps you are referring to changes that were made to the reference over time, which of course has also happened with PP and AP.

Genta did design the Reference 1832 "jumbo" Ingenieur, introduced in 1976.

genta designed a lot of watches. . that doesn't make them all magical designs. if i were going for an "off the run" genta design that is still classic i'd take a tropical UG polerouter date over the IWC any day of the week and twice on sundays :)

Since you mention it, I'd take a vintage Certina DS over a Polerouter any day of the week, and would probably have enough money left over to buy one or two more. :D

so in a thread about an IWC designed by Genta. . and other expensive watches designed by Genta, and an Omega designed by Genta, and polerouters which are cheaper watches designed by Genta. . its relevant that you'd rather have a Certina DS how exactly ? ::facepalm1::

this is a thread about the Picasso of watch design. . not about the artists who tried to imitate him

i mean, hey, i love rolex daytonas. anyone else ?? LOL

It is true that my post wasn't directly relevant to Genta, but your over-the-top reaction is rather silly.

The DS wasn't an imitation, and perhaps some readers might benefit from learning about watches that were similar to those produced by the subject designer, or inspired by his designs.

i guess that's fair. Certina's are very nice watches and historically important. We should start some threads on them. But Gentas they are not

and now, back to our normal programming

Designed in 1954 by Gerald Genta at the age of 23, this is his first legendary contribution to #watchmaking. The SAS Polerouter was commissioned by Universal Geneve to commemorate the historic flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles via the North Pole. The first #watches were given to the cabin crew of the Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) upon landing in LAX. #horlogy#watchcollector#watchnerd#watchgeek#luxury#luxe#watchesofinstagram#watches#swissmade#menswatches#watchaddict#finewatchmaking#geraldgentaheritage#horlogeriesuisse#watchporn Photo credits: @hamblar

Thanks for posting, it reminded me of a watch I bought but has not been worn much. Just took it out of the drawer after reading your post and took a quick photo of it. Forget how simple and classy it looks. Maybe time for a bit of air for it, no worry about magnetic field problems either !!
