It finally happened... my first fraudulent Paypal claim.

An update on this: I spoke with someone at ebay today. They assured me that since I shipped to the address on file and was able to provide tracking, the dispute would be settled in my favor. They also transferred me to a department that looks into accounts that may have been compromised, they said they would follow up with me after contacting the buyer. I'll update the thread if that happens.

I haven't heard back from Paypal yet, and they're the ones who need to decide the case. Time will tell I guess.

The most important point to follow up on though, I haven't gotten my wife flowers yet, but plan to tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement there. I'll be sure to post a pic of the bouquet, as it was a group effort 😁

eBay has the discretionary ability to make you whole regardless of PP's decision. Their roles are somewhat different here. It's complicated, and depends on the outcome of the investigation. PP will decide on the current claim, but if they don't decide in your favor, you can request reimbursement from eBay, since the sale was made on their platform and your followed their rules in good faith. I realize $30 isn't worth much of your time, but it's very interesting to hear first-hand about how these cases are worked out.

Just as an illustration of how complicated these cases can be. I once bought a watch fo $1200 that was lost and not delivered to me. USPS attempted to deliver it but I wasn't home to sign, so they took it back to the post office and then lost it. I made a claim and the seller made a counter-claim. eBay decided that the seller's responsibility ended when USPS made the attempt to deliver and found in his favor. That made me really frustrated obviously, but fortunately the shipment was insured ... sort of.

The seller had written explicitly in the listing that the watch would be shipped fully insured, but I later learned that he only insured the watch for half of the sale price ($600). I argued to eBay that I shouldn't be responsible for the other half, since I had no control over how the seller chose to ship the watch. Ultimately, eBay decided that they would supplement USPS's insurance pay-out so that I would be reimbursed the full amount I paid. So they basically agreed to eat $600, even though their fee was only $120. Basically, it seems like a customer service decision that they saw as the cost of doing business. You won't find anything about this type of thing in their terms and conditions, but the managers at eBay have a lot of discretion.

Thanks for sharing that story, Dan. After speaking with ebay today. I did wonder how they would handle the situation if the price of the item were more substantial, and it’s helpful to hear how your experience unfolded with a higher cost item.

It’s flower-time.

I took today off, but my wife is working. I think she was quite pleased when she turned around for a break, and these were there to greet her (we’re both teleworking, currently.)

Per usual, the OF community gets results.
