Is this a real speed master? Is it worth saving? It was free.

    Real Speedmaster - yes

    Speedmaster Pro -- no.

Need a dial, case, hands, strap/ bracelet, and likely a movement. Basically you need to assemble a replacement watch from new parts. Seems like that would cost more than just buying a new one.

I've got quite a few parts. And expense isn't really an issue, I was curious as to its authenticity. It was a gift to me by someone.

From those pictures I would not call it real... These where faked to a high level. That being said, are you sure there was a red "Speedmaster" on non moonphase non pro models? or it should have the ZO2 wording on it.

Costs for parts and service would likely get you near the price of a used one if it is real. I'd be concerned about the movement being exposed to air for so long.

Appreciate it! I wear a GMT Master II most of the time, and I collect a few other vintage Anerican watches so Omega is new to me! Even though I am familiar with what the Speedy is I'm not well versed in its ins and outs.

might as well just send it off to Omega and see what they quote you to repair it. If the bill is more than a used one (entirely possible) then you know what to do with it.

It's more a sentimental value item than something I'd restore. I was just curious about it

Could be one more or those uncle’s watches. Following along to see what it is once you receive it.

Is there at least a good story about how it got that way?

He built race cars, mostly for vintage racing.
