Is this normal? - Speedy 3869

I was running the Chrono on my Speedy and noticed that the 30 minute hand jumps forward at 59 seconds and not 60.

In general this is a nitpick but for the price of this thing I would expect it to be much more precise.

Buy yourself a QUARTZ chronograph for the pinpoint accuracy you obviously expect.

When the minute hand clicks over the central chrono hand is at 59.5......it's acceptable in my book. How much more precise would you expect it to be? It's a mechanical watch, not a digital quartz watch.

Obviously my expectations are too high…. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm going to see if my Speedy does this. I'll find a pitchfork and join you if it does!

I just checked my 6 yo Apollo 8 with the 1869 movement, shows same thing as the OP's shows. Have had it for six years, never checked it, and it's a big 'meh' for me, not worth worrying about.

Pretty normal I think. My 3861 does the same. The 30 minute subdial hands starts to crawl a bit at 58 seconds, then jumps somewhere between 59 and 60 seconds. I wondered the same thing when I got it back in March. I always enjoy watching that little hand crawl then jump.

What bugs me is the 12 hour subdial sometimes being out of sync with the 30 minute subdial, but I've gotten used to it and rarely time things that long.

Not really. It can be adjusted pretty easily.

So any of us really use the stopwatch or chronometer function? Not me, so meh too.

You have a 1/60 chance that any timing event will end up with the second counter between 59 and 60 that could cause confusion as to the elapsed minutes. In that event it's easy enough to figure out how many minutes have elapsed by just doing a quick on/off of the chrono to advance the central seconds hand so the turnover to the next minute is complete. I don't really time much stuff, usually just randomly running it to exercise the mechanism which I often forget about and a few hours later I notice the chrono is running, and I really can't remember stopping it randomly at the 59 or 60 second mark. It can be adjusted finer but just not worth it to me to take or send it to Omega service for adjustment. Maybe if you had a trusted independent that could do it in short order it might be worth it, but I don't.

Historical design, some drwabacks are intentional. For modern pure mechanical design you can get caliber 9900 with vertical clutch, double barrel, column wheel and higher accuracy. But caseback caliber view is not so spectacular.
