Is this an original transitional Speedmaster?

@abrod520 sounds like a horror story! Thanks for your advise.
I'll make sure that they don't do anything else than swapping the hands and crown. Or just return everything untouched.

Best case scenario at this stage is that everything gets returned untouched. I would insist that the shipment just be returned, period. If you can prevent them from even unpacking it, even better. There is zero chance OMEGA will retrace their steps to install old parts removed in a previous authorized service.

If it were mine, once I got her back safely (and I think you will!) I would just enjoy it as-is for a few years. It鈥檚 a gem and in stellar condition. So enjoy it. In the meantime, locate a skilled watchmaker who is experienced servicing vintage Speedmasters. Maybe you can even find one close by. And then in 4 or 5 years, turn it in for another service, at which point the hands can be reinstalled. Find a watchmaker with an OMEGA parts account, and you can even get period correct pushers.

I might also seek advice on the best way in which to store those hands so they don鈥檛 deteriorate. They are great and they must go back on! 馃憤

Someone mentioned having the lume stabilized. I鈥檇 be curious to know what鈥檚 involved here. I assume applying something to the backside...but what? I鈥檒l never be doing this myself...again, just curious!

Wow ... I would have never thought that it could be a bad idea to go with the mothership OMEGA. I pretty much assumed it's the first choice actually.
Well, I'll see where this adventure ends and let you know.

I use the clear binder piqued that is used for mixing with lume powder. Applies from the back side of the hand it will help keep the lume intact, and not affect the appearance of the hand. Omega could use many hands over again if they simply took the time to do this, but they take the quickest way out - hand swap.

Cheers, Al

Here is an update:

I heard back from my watch store. Omega did already change the hands and the crown. My watch will be returned soon.

And like we all have assumed, Omega don't cover any warranty for the reliability of the hands and also for the water resistance as the old crown doesn't offer sufficient seal anymore.

My question to you, who uses old crowns: Is the compromise just not to use it in direct contact with water? Rain, shower, hand wash etc.? That would be no problem. I don't do that anyway.

But what about sweat or cold/warm-condensation?

When I cleaned up my old crown before sending it in, I pulled out that little seal thing (see photo). It filled the empty area around the inner cylinder (see red marking in second photo). I actually assumed that the little seal thing was the original broken seal. I thought Omega will just replace it. But after research it seems like that the real seal goes like a O-ring around the outer side of the crown. Not really reachable. And the little seal thing that I pulled out seem to be a self-made seal.
So, I can't really tell anymore if my old crown has a seal at all now. Omega don't replace the seal alone.

Is there a way to replace the seal of the crown? Any experience or advice?
Thanks!

Here is my final report:

My watch returned and the crown and hands are replaced by the original old ones. Of course they excluded any guarantee and pointed out that the watch is not water resistant anymore. The water resistance issue with the old crown made me a bit nervous, so I put a lot of efforts into it to replace the seal of the crown. I succeeded and I'm very happy now.

The next thing that I'm going after is to look for a vintage 1171 bracelet. I own a nato strap and a 1479 bracelet. After some research I found out that my 1479 seems not to be the correct time period to my 1971 watch. So I might swap it if I find the right deal.

Thank you all for your help!

Going to throw my first (second) thought into the mix here:

my true first thought was "lovely watch". I need to make friends with your friends and family .. and be 30 again.

Here's what I was thinking as I read through and went back over the photos: the production date and serial number puts that slap bang in the middle of the range where Speedmasters were being produced with a 220 bezel. (A mention of the 220 bezel is here: https://www.fratellowatches.com/speedy-tuesday-omega-speedmaster-professional-145-022-buyers-guide-part-2/ ).

The DON isn't strictly correct for this watch but a wonderfully valuable mistake to have. I would strongly suspect that this watch was originally delivered with a 220 that was replaced very quickly, perhaps even before it was purchased, with a bezel that did not contain an error. I wouldn't worry about the DON. In fact, I'd be quite pleased to have it, Just thought that I should put this suggestion into the mix.

@jimmyd13 thank you for your input!
I'm not familiar with all the fine Speedmaster details yet, but I'm on my best way. As for a 220 bezel, I've found a forum discussion where stated that these bezels were used in 1970 with movement numbers between 30.589.xxx and 31.008.xxx.
Mine is 1971 and has the movement number 32.2xx.xxx. I'm not sure if this is already a reason to exclude the 220-Bezel-theory. On the other hand, all you Omega-Vintage-People state that the DON-bezel is unusual for my Speedmaster.

I guess, there is a chance that I won't really find out. But anyhow, I'll enjoy to dive into the Speedmaster universe now...

I own a 145022-69 with a 3099xxx serial, from the very first owner, delivered Late October 1970 and sold to him August 1972. It bears a DON which it shouldn't, like yours.
And as I said before: in these hard times you need to learn living with a DON when it should be a DNN 馃榾

1971? There were two "sets" of serial numbers but I must have misread your extract as I thought it was 1970. As you were. Stand by your beds!. Please return to your normal programming. 馃槈

It was a local collector. My brother said that he had a pretty hard time to convince him to let it go. 馃榾
