A friend of mine just received this in the mail from one of the families he coaches.

I don't know anything about Rolex nor does he but he asked for my thoughts knowing I'm a watch guy.

Ya, just from the phone pics, it looks fake. But I know nothing about Rolex.

He took it to a jeweler, they told him it was the 18k gold plated version, and "real deal". Worth $12k.

That was funny. He is a good coach. Two high school state champions he has coached. In addition to my son.

Ya, he is coming over Tuesday, I'm not sure what to say to him. He shared this with me because he knows I'm into watches.

You could just tell him that if it was real....it would be worth over $10k..
Laugh it off... Silly him for thinking it is real..
Tell him not to use it out in the field or the yellow will wash off..

I'm always amazed at how people give fake Rolexes as gifts without saying they're fake.
It really says something about their character...

Some people are EXTREMELY ignorant about watches and fall for any line.

"My jeweler said you can not tell it from the Swiss ones"
"It came straight from the factory in China, by passing the store mark up.
"He got it at Costco, they get them really cheap"
"He won it in a contest"
"He bought from someone desperate for money"
"They normally cost $1000 dollars, but he got it for $350"

To add more, he does not know who exactly sent it. It arrived UPS with a note, "Merry Christmas from your track and field family". Not sure why he did not look at return address, but he has narrowed it down to one of two families.

In any case, I will defer to my wife. She is way better at what is socially appropriate than I am. I tend to talk first and think later.

Call him immediately and tell him to sell it to that jeweler as soon as possible

Well considering it has a quartz movement the jeweler missed the obvious tell.

The 15, 30, and 45 markers are so out of line how could you not know it's fake?!

This is always the best idea. There was a thread recently on the discussion of telling someone they have a fake watch or not.

+1. Even if he received 30% of the jeweler's estimate the coach would be way ahead! In any case, the letters in the rehaut don't match up with the minute markers. Rehauts were introduced around the mid-Z serial numbers on the Daytona (around 2005). So the dial should not have the t-Swiss made-t markings. Rolex Daytona two tones use 18k gold in the bezel and bracelet, NOT gold plate.

    All the Best.
