Hello, I have the option to buy this watch.
Having read advice on this forum re spotting fakes, I see this does not have the symbol on the crystal and it is worn a lot on the winder.
Condition wise the dial has a lot of patina, but it seems to be working well.
The current owner is not asking a lot but I still do not want to buy a fake.
I am happy to say how much the asking price is, but I not sure if that's the done thing on this forum.
Thank you in advance if you can help.
    B.J.

You will have to spend a bit to get it running, the second hand is missing and who knows what else? Plus its not the most attractive thing.. But a desirable watch still.. I would say anything under $500 and you will be ahead with a good watchmaker to service it.

Just running doesn't mean a whole lot.

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts Kja.
I have it on loan for a few more days and it is keeping time fine at the moment. The asking price is £200 which seems fair if it is working.
    Can the dial be cleaned?

I would buy it all day long at that price.

I doubt you can clean that dial (I wouldn't) but everything else should be fixable and it might clean up well as the case looks dirty and not corroded but, you're in a better position to judge any corrosion.

Needs a sweep seconds pinion, friction spring for that (probably), second hand, crown, stem (probably), service and new seals. Also looks like it will need a new rotor bush. That's the minimum list and will cost £300-400 on top of the purchase price so, you need to make sure you're happy at a total of about £600.

    Cheers, Chris

    Thanks Chris.
    That is amazing info.
I have been buying vintage beaters for the last few months and learning more as I go along.
I got this today so will enjoy giving the case a bit of a clean, wear it for a few day's, then decide wether to keep it.

Clean is OK. Polish, not so much.;)

As I said in another place, I like it, and a sympathetic service will do wonders for it, IMO.

The price is good, and I'm sure it looks better in person. I suspect you'll grow to like it.

It does look nicer in RL and a bit better with the dust blown off and a trial brown strap.

Just because it "runs OK" doesn't mean it isn't way past due for service.

Thanks XJR, I realise a service is a must. My main concern before I bought it was if it was fake. Also if it was overpriced was a concern. Feeling very positive about it now and it will be visiting a watchmaker I have met who probably has a second hand for this. I will show the results if that happens.

Here is mine, a 14381-9 on a 17.7547m serial so closely related, mine is within 100 serial numbers:

    Wow, beautiful.
Within 100 serial no. That’s crazy!
I saw on a date chart that the 17 million no’s date the watch to 1959, is that correct?

I place it 1960. This model with this movement wasn't available until '60 so you are looking at 60-61. I have a Geneve on a 17.77m serial (shown below) which has has a hallmark for the year from June 1960- May 1961 so IMO that places 17.75 in 1960, though with Omega it often isn't that easy and an extract is the the definitive answer.

I so hope it’s 1961, that’s when I was born. A birth year omega watch is on my wish list.

I say you call it a birth year watch without paying for an extract. It's close enough. ;-)

I could look into changing my birth certificate to 1960.

It's a nice watch and the price is fair in my opinion.
