I had always heard a months salary. I like where you are going with this though... I'll talk to my wife about a retro-active watch purchase as my engagement present!

I got married early. I heard about that development where in exchange for the engagement ring, the girl is expected to give an engagement watch to the guy. My brother was able to enjoy this phenomenon (but drawback is, it seems he cant wear anything else but his engagement watch).

Then to one up, the push gift was invented. So for each birth, the husband must give a gift to the wife.

Guess it depends on aspirations. Cars could be considered a hobby for the super rich if you are only interested in Ferrari’s etc. But sometimes the real joy is in a reasonably priced old classic with lots of history.

Same with watches. There are plenty of collectible watches to fit most price brackets and the love of the history and workmanship is the same. Treat yourself, you only live once

This is my exact stance. I own watches from the $200 - $10K+ range and get equal enjoyment out of them all. Each serves a “purpose” within my collection and I try to buy what i like over what is popular regardless of price. As long as it’s eithin my means financially.

Honestly no matter what Financial level you are on. If you buy smart your good to go . Worst case scenario you get your money back. I picked up 2 zeniths the other day on a bundle for what I'm selling one the other ends up free.

I'm assuming by now the OP has paid off any Dentist college debts, put his kids through Uni and is picking a colour for his Porsche, so the original question is a bit *moot* by now?😁

Beyond the essentials in life such as food, shelter, clothing, etc., such money as you have left after attending to the essentials might be considered discretionary income. There are a lot of ways to disperse that discretionary income. A lot of those ways result in your having nothing to show you spent the money, and you have no assets to show for it. Spending the money on a tangible asset such as a watch makes sense to me. Call me NOT “super rich”.

Not mute because people are still talking about, but definitely moot. 😀

This thread is certainly active with many opinions shared. The OP would not be on the forum if they weren't looking for the luxury time piece. I was in the same boat as the OP and I struggled for months trying to talk myself out of this is a luxury purchase. Do I need it...no. Do I want it...yes. I have always enjoyed watches and have a nice dive watch (Tag aqua racer) that has served me for 15 years but I got the itch late last year and could not shake it.

So the question is really not is the a hobby for the super rich but rather an attempt to talk ones self out of a luxury desire. Good luck to the OP as for me I succumbed and purchased a Speedmaster Pro from a OF member 2 weeks ago. By the way I am not super rich.

3-5k for your first watch always feels like a huge commitment (and it is!) but be warned! It seems to get a lot easier to rationalize and you will soon find yourself looking at 8-10k or 15-20k pieces 👎

And to answer your question, no we are not all millionaires! I work hard and put a little aside to allow myself to indulge now and then 😀

"I want to tell her that I love her but the point is probably moot". This is how I as a kid learnt that word!

Hello,

I’m a 30 something dentist who’s been eyeing my first Omega (speedmaster Pro) but haven’t been able to justify purchasing one. Am I just too darn cheap or are most of you multimillionaires? The reason I started this thread is I guess I want you guys to help me rationalize to myself why I should buy it.

Thanks in advance.
Took me me almost seven months to save up for my Pro Speedmaster. (old age pensioner)
I wear it 24/7...watch is to be worn not to be kept in wraps..........so do a couple of fillings and your paid for it ,think no more its cheap watch for what it is.

Hi!
I think its about priorities. Watches are my greatest interest and I therefore have a large part of my money in them.

That being said, I and the mayority (regardless what people say), rely on that watches keep the value so far. I would never have the collection I have today (which is small compared to many here) if I would not have had some watches that increased a lot in value and thereby added some cash that I could.. . Spend on new watches... 😉 Also, the watches I purchased a couple of years back often costed a lot less than they do today. And lastly, I often but Tissots and Certinas for less than 1k eur... 😉

Totally agree

Only advice is get a good safe

Insurance is not enough when these watches live your life with you and tell a story. They become priceless

I don't think watch collecting is a hobby for the super rich. There are so many different price points for people. You could go super expensive luxury watches down to Casio G-Shocks (and I know people who collect only G-Shocks). It's much like any other hobby. You have to balance your expenses to fund your hobby. Different strokes for different folks.
