Is this a bad idea?

Hey watch peeps, I'm in need of the groups opinion.
I've been having serious thoughts of selling my dearly beloved Black Bay 58 in order to get my hands on a good example of a 1st gen Planet Ocean 42mm. Is this a bad decision? The 58 is a friggin' excellent watch. A near perfect watch really. But I've been pining over the PO since first seeing it in the movie Casino Royale in 2006. I can't have both. They are both different obviously and watch forums are filled with "which should I choose". I'm not really concerned with long term resale value of either. I'm wondering is this a lateral move, a step down, or is it a step up? Is the PO a now dated design, or will it continue to hold up?
Fire away folks. Any opinion is appreciated especially if you have worn both to give impressions on how they compare with feeling on the wrist.

I have no direct knowledge of either watch, but if you find the BB 58 to be "near perfect", then the other would be an awfully small step up, at best!

So my vote is to stay put.

If you love your BB why get rid of it? Personally it’s way more interesting than the PO.

Huge difference between the two in size and design. If possible keep your BB58, save, and get the PO.

Follow your heart, do what you think it's right for you. Seems like you have desired the PO for a while, it is an awesome watch! You can always get a BB58 in the future.

Have you tried on the PO? If not, you might want to try to find a way to do so. As others have said, the size difference between the two is substantial. Enough to potentially leave you with massive regret if that is one of the elements you love about the BB58.

I have yet to try one on but I'm hoping to soon, which would obviously help. However, my other watch is a Speedmaster and fits great on me. They do share some similarities in case design so the PO shouldn't be completely foreign to me.

I only tried on the PO w/ the bracelet and the thing was massive and heavy, even compared to the 2254.50 I was wearing at the time. For me, the PO is just way too big.

This was the one I tried on, I actually don't know which specific ref it is, I didn't check, felt massive. I don't have particularly large wrists so anything over 40mm starts to feel like a bit much.

I am in the camp of adding to the collection rather than trading, but if this is really not an option, then try the PO on before you do anything hastily.
Good luck.

You definitely need to try the PO one. It’s one thick/tall watch. I lover the PO in concept and design. But I just can’t wear it as it’s too large on my 7.25” wrist. If you’re into big watches, this might work.

Thats good reference as I used to own a 2254. Is it possible you tried on the 45mm Planet Ocean considering how large it felt?

I can't have both.

Lies.

Save up more to get the PO and keep your BB.
If you sell the BB now, even though you think its perfect, you'll just end up wanting it again a few years down the line. Then you'll buy it again and take an overall net loss.

Many will say the 1st generation Planet Ocean is the best looking one. With that spear-shaped seconds hand counter balance, matte dial, and metal caseback. It's also the thinnest PO to-date.

I'm a happy owner of a current-gen 43.5mm PO, and don't mind the heft. The original 2201.50 wears much lighter, and lower. Regardless of the generation, I personally like the handset on the Planet Ocean more than the Tudor snowflake.

I've had 2 2500-caliber Omegas, and both kept time in chronometer specs. You won't find anything inferior about the Planet Ocean, when it comes to the spec sheet. If this will be your daily wearer, the increased power reserve on the BB 58 won't matter.

A few of characteristics to keep in mind though, in case they bother you:
1) The PO has anti-refective coating on both the outside, and inside. If you're tough on the watch, you can scratch exterior coating.
2) The Omega will have marginally slower beat rate. So the hand sweet isn't as smooth as that on the Tudor.
3) Date change on the Planet Ocean is not instantaneous. Not an issue if you're already in bed between 11pm - midnight though 😀

Personally I think that in this scenario the PO is the better watch. Besides, the time for buying a good example of a 1st gen PO is now. I see prices creeping up and good full sets of a 2500D PO are getting close to the 8500 variants. If you really can't have both, I'd say do it. The BB58 can be reacquired in the future as it is not a discontinued watch.

I have a 1st year Blackbay. I like it, but doesn't wear it much anymore. The BB58 has some significant design improvements, but what makes it (in your words) near-perfect is that is getting close to the watch all the fans would want Tudor to make (again): A proper Submariner. In that sense I feel the PO has a more defined personality.

I have a 2201.50 so, regarding what to expect... The 2500 PO is the thinnest and lightest, but it is still a tall and heavy watch. In size and thickness I find it wears a lot like a 5-digit Sea Dweller, which kinda makes sense as it is the deep-diver Seamaster. In weight, the PO bracelet is significantly heavier (excellent, though).

You say you had a 2254 SMP before, expect the PO to feel heavier and significantly taller on the wrist. Same for the Speedmaster, the PO may look somewhat similar but wears nothing like it.

That said, I love the PO. It is a serious diver's watch with a lot of heritage and personality. And the 2500 movement (try to find a 2500D) is considered to be excellent and time proven.

I'm wearing mine most of the time since I got it in January. It's been one of the longest honeymoons I've had with a watch.

Regarding the comment by Alfista88 about the AR coating on the outside: it makes the crystal disappear ! I love the look. I have a couple of scratches on mine, but the fact is that you can always polish it off if it gets too obviously scratched.

Some pics to illustrate what I said (my wrist is 7.25 to 7.5" depending on the season)

Certainly possible, just to add too, it was a really nice looking watch. Just too big for my liking.

The watch collector world is chock full of stories of flipped watches that were later regretted. If the PO is that big of a draw, save up. If you can't wait or HAVE to purchase it now, guess you put one on a credit card.

As they say, you only live once. As mentioned by others, the prices are rising on them and the 2500D versions are getting hard to find. If you do get one, consider replacing the original clasp with a current Omega adjustable one for even more comfort and adjustability.

Obligatory wrist shot (I have a 7 - 7.2 inch wrists).

I agree to that.
