Is this a 222100?

Hi,

Yet another day and yet another UG comes to my attention, this time the famed Tri-Compax.

To me, the dial looks original, though I must admit that for something from the 60's it looks more aged than other examples I've seen (so more worn out).

The other thing I think might be inconsistent is the second hand which might be a replacement, not sure.

The seller has priced it at 7000 USD but there might be further room for negotiations. Personally, I've always thought the Tri-Compax was too busy for me but lately, I've been warming up to them more and more, especially after viewing them in person at the recently concluded Dubai Watch Week. I still prefer the simple symmetry of the two crown pushers, but this is their real crowning glory from what I understand.

It was recently overhauled so there are even more detailed pictures of every aspect of the movement here.

From other examples of the 222100 I've seen the caseback has no serial number and the crown is signed.

As always, click on the image to view the higher resolution version.

It looks like a 222100/2
The case reference and case serial are lightly engraved on the caseback compared to earlier years, and so they are often lost with wear and polishing. If the numbers are still visible this helps value and if they are missing it hurts value a bit.
The chrono sweep hand looks replaced. Also something is really wrong with the upper case corrector (the small buttons on the left side of the case for setting the complications). I can't really tell what is going on, except it's obviously wrong.
The case looks a bit banged up, and then polished.
Most importantly I think the dial is pretty ugly.
Trying to find original watches that tick all the correct boxes is so hard, it's easy to loose sight of more basic questions, like "is this watch attractive?" and "Do I love this watch?". This is obviously subjective, but for me personally, it's a big no on this watch.
Don't spend $7K on a watch unless it knocks your socks off and you completely love it.
I've learned this lesson the really hard way.

Here's a 222100/1 of mine, just for comparison. it helps to have the linen dial really clean and also to have the lume intact and nicely aged to a warm tone...

I never replied to this and went through this thread again after being in the "learning" phase for Tri-Compax for the past 3-4 months.

Firstly, I have to give my thanks and appreciation to people like @bgrisso (and obviously many others) whose love, appreciation, knowledge and simple passion for these obscure models is rather infectious.

Having said, with all the problems of this watch (Chrono hands possibly a replacement, one of the pushers being slightly misshapen, the worn-out dial, the lost off patina, the date hand possibly being incorrect), I now think the price is actually "fair" at less than 7k USD (seller has reduced it even further since I last engaged with him) considering it's been fully serviced and that prices for those in better condition (like the one sold at Hodinkee last year) are beyond the 10k USD mark.

Anyway, the search continues....
