Technology in the space program is a strange thing... Just take a look at how difficult it is nowadays to produce a decent launcher for the different space program. They are unable to produce something close to the Saturn V from the 60's which functioned perfectly.

Sometimes electronics are not a good thing to have on board, and to be able to rely on mechanical devices is a better option... I don't know how..
Take Boeing 737 Max case for instance.....
Nobody is sure whether latest technology and electronics helped Boeing made air travel safer or worse....

I don't know how sensitive the components of electronic watches are when exposed to magnetism like an EMP for example...

I agree there is more to it - especially for the re-entry trip home. I made a post in that regard here(link below). It looks like a NASA guy wearing a speedy home under the radar. He did not have one visible for launch. Sponsorship plays a big part but not the whole story.

The Speedmaster is incredibly versatile for a chrono - goes with almost anything - and is very reliable and robust to boot. So I'd say it's both. Great to see it's still retaining at least some of its usefulness.

Speedmasters are one of the least "blingy" watches out there. I consider it a tool watch and not a luxury watch. Even Rolex makes some pure tool watches, and they cost 3x-4x what a Speedy costs.

For the vast majority I'm assuming it's a hobby watch. I mean how many of us are actually using the chronograph function daily? I wear the Speedy basically every day, but have used the chronograph only once ...for cooking, of all things.

On that note, what makes your watch a luxury watch? The frequency of wear? Whether you baby it? I baby my watch, but leave it on when doing most manual labor (albeit being mindful not to bang it against things). Even if I were to have a $200 watch I'd baby it just the same.

The OP’s original question: “Is the Moonwatch still a tool watch or just a luxury one”

Answer: once a tool, always a tool. The Speedmaster still has working time and chronograph functions, so it can and is still used as a tool.

The only argument made against this is that it may no longer be the “best” tool, but having newer and better tools does not take away tool status from the older and/or original tools. A slide rule and rotary phone still work and can be used as the tools they are, regardless of what new tools are available.

We don’t need solid evidence proving it is still used as a tool to validate the fact that it is a tool. Once a tool, always a tool.

Second alternative proposed by the OP, “just a luxury one” — hell to the no. As @Foo2rama pointed out, tool and luxury and not mutually exclusive categories. That some people buy and wear a Speedmaster primarily as a luxury watch does not kick it out of the original classification as a tool watch. That is absurd...

.

Use it heaps, how long it takes to inspect a V22 or a Huey, how long I was on a flight to a oil rig, how long I was on a gas boat, how long most jobs are for billing.
Several times a day. And not everyone has a desk jobs and not that there is many desks in Darwin
