I was at a conference in Seattle about 15 years ago, or so. Roger was a featured speaker at that conference. He told the story about the watch he made and took to the Isle on Man, to show George Daniels. The story he told at that conference was a bit different than the story he told in the article uploaded here. The way he told it in person was that Daniels was interested in Roger's watch, but was a bit dismissive about it! He (IIRC) told Roger to take the watch home and work on it, and bring back a much better watch! Roger did! Perhaps it was the second watch that caused Daniels to tell Roger that he had made it as a watchmaker.
