I am not an expert and a newer member of this forum. But I've seen enough of these by now to know that a black dial that pristine with no degradation at all and with lettering/minute marks that sharp and in focus against the black for a 50+ year old watch just screams redial.

This is a rookie's opinion and I'd be happy to be corrected.

So do you think this is a redial too?

Regarding the OP watch: Lugs look a little soft, and I *think* there's plating loss on the crown. The crosshairs don't look as neat as yours, which makes me wonder if they were added later.

Sorry. The last one is not mine but from @TexOmega. :D

Anyway, I'm leaning towards original. Moy fine, crosshair not overlapping the pie pan, n's are looking great, T and lume on hands, font looks new but hey... that's probably because this dial is in fantastic shape and was well cared for... Am curious what tge others have to say...

By the way, this is my old lady...

Looks like a very nice original gold gilt dial, to bad about the case though.

The pics are so overexposed it is impossible to get a good look at the dial lettering edges, etc. Looks like plating loss on the lugs, polishing, etc. As already stated, dial sure does look brand new, while rest of watch not so much...

Yeah, I'm sticking with the thought that the crosshairs weren't done at the factory, even if the rest of the dial is original. They just seem too uneven/thick compared to the other watches posted in the thread.

Haha. I love black dials. Always the doubt... Yes, the thickness of the crosshair... You have a point! But still think it's original...

Speculating is one thing but would anybody have the bottle to pull the trigger on a Buy it Now? Certainly not me.

Did you miss the part where I said I'm a rookie and not an expert? What's with the pop quiz?

OK , consider yourself corrected. While the conditions you mentioned can cause degradation, They do not mandate it. There are plenty of cases where these watches led a sheltered life.
This one was owned by the founder of the XXXX Company, hardly worn, it was given to his cook.
    Another gilt dial.

Now go back a decade or two more and the likelihood of degradation goes up a fair bit more.

BTW, the original posted watch would make a great candidate for finding a much better condition 168.005 GC case for replacement .

But I was using your watch (albeit the misattributed ownership) as the standard to compare the subject watch. So yeah, I'm sorry I didn't realize who owned your excellent example

    Hi,
I am new to this game of spot the difference, but I notice that Chronometre is spelt ..metre and ...meter.
    Is that significant?
