I recently inherited this gold Rolex from my dad. My mum gave it to him in the late 1960’s before I was born and he wore it occasionally despite the fact they separated back in the 70’s.
I know a little about submariners, but this is a very long way out of my wheelhouse so I would be very interested to hear any comments or information that you can give, good or bad. I guess it’s quite polished, but is the dial, hands etc.. original?
There is some strap wear between the lugs which makes it hard to read the model ref and serial number but the ref looks like 1002 to me and the serial 1770…
Many thanks.

Ref 1002 is likely correct, 34mm and a 1.7 million serial sounds about right, putting the watch to around 1968, which lines up with the timeline you’ve been told.

Dial looks original, hard to say if that wear is all on the dial or the crystal as well, but looks like an honest example. The hands are hard to say in the current pics as well - they appear correct for the time period but I’d check them under UV light to see how the tritium lume compares to the hour markers.

As noted it has been heavily polished, which is unfortunate but hopefully a piece you plan to keep so less concerning in terms of how that will hurt resale value.

It’s a cool piece from your dad - enjoy!

Looks like a 9k mark on the back of the lug (375). But between the lugs the damage almost looks like lost plating, or perhaps that's a reflection.

I’m fairly sure it’s solid gold, I think that’s dirt between the lugs.

Well, 9K is not really gold, but I know what you mean. 😉
