A good landing is when you can walk away from - a great landing is, when you can use the airplane again (Brian Shul).

congrats anyway - and precise landing for the BRICS-summit at Johannesburg

Great news. From the NYT: 'That India managed to outdo (Russia), a nation that put the first satellite, man and woman in space is a measure of the country’s long embrace of the science and technology needed to support a space program.'

That's gotta hurt.

Huge congratulations to the Indian Space Research Organization. Russia? Not so much.

Yes and no. Most of us think of this walking and chewing gum at the same time. Every country has problems and while solving those problems, countries have to move forward as well.

There are some of things this and other space programs has done for India
1) Technologies that is being used in the space program has percolated down to common man use and has made some cutting edge areas cheaper
2) Pushes the nation towards self sufficiency goal in a critical area of technology and we have had problems in this area before
3) With cheaper launch vehicles, other countries are using India's PSLV and GSLV to launch their satellites bringing in much needed forex
4) Maybe will inspire the younger generation and may help in avoiding brain drain.

There are problems as well but India's overall space program has a much small budget compared to other countries and not sure saving this money is going to make a huge difference is solving other problems.

Not sure where you’re located, but you can make the same statement about every country with a space program. I’m in the U.S. and we’re hardly leading the rest of the world in the way that we care for our less fortunate citizens who face challenges that were not of their own making.

This is an outrageous comment! You probably should get a fυcking life first!

Going by this logic no one shouldn’t work towards anything else unless every naysayer has been pampered! For eg US shouldn’t spend billions of dollars on Ukraine / Afghanistan or wherever unti every single homeless person in the country has been given a ranch house!

We are not talking about ranches but about toilets. Pretty basic stuff.

November 19 is World Toilet Day, a crucial health issue in India. According to the World Bank, nearly 15 percent of the country's population does not have access to a toilet and the consequences are severe: water pollution, waterborne diseases and sexual violence. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that open defecation would be eradicated in India. Eight years after the government's promise, India still lacks toilets and the country's sanitary problems are not getting any better.

To put that into perspective: 200 million people.

Nobody was disputing that, but it's a thread about space exploration and accomplishments and all you've tried to do is immediately side-track it.

At the risk of getting banned from this awesome website, I am going to call you an asshole! Coz that’s what you are!!

I am an Indian and I am supremely proud of what my country has achieved today. I don't want a random asshole on internet telling me that my country needs toilets before it can dream of and then go on to actually become only the fourth country in the world to be able to land a spacecraft successfully on moon ( and the first on its south pole).

I think it is a great achievement not only for India but the whole world.

The more countries that get involved and advance the technology and broaden the labour base expertise means that long term costs will come down, tech and missions will become more refined and the eventual upshot is that we will as a species have the ability to get off this mud ball and spread the human demographic to ensure the survival of our species.

I think that also consequentially drags the rest of humanity along with it also thus ensuring that 200 million Indians get the toilets they deserve, bigger picture folks.

I not only dont mind but also appreciate your way of bringing out the issue of lack of toilets in India. We didnt need to talk about the lack of toilets on a day and a thread like this but I guess we can have all the toilets in the world but can still find people ( like that guy above ) shitting over internet 😉 !

I love it when white people tell brown people how they should develop, 'cos that's worked so well for them every time we've tried it before...

Congratulations to everyone involved in the moonshot

I think it’s the far side of the moon. Dark side of the moon is an album by Pink Floyd.

Not to pile on, but the same argument was made in 1968 and 1969 during the build up to the Apollo moon landings. Many Americans thought the money spent on Apollo would have been better spent on improving civil rights and ending Vietnam.

The benefits of space were considered worth the cost.

At the same time, people should respect your opinion, even if you might have expressed it more delicately (and your timing is poor.)
