I just received my first Rolex. I somehow? managed to convince my former girlfriend and current Fiance that it was customary in America, She is French, to exchange a watch for an engagement ring. The results of my efforts yielded the birth year, 1987, barely vintage watch below.

While a cyclops would never be my first choice, I did not have any input and I am thus very pleased with the outcome 😀. (My ideal selection for a birth year watch would have been the Speedmaster 'Holy Grail' 376.082)

Congrats! I dig that watch because it says 1987 (a great year, by the way... right up until the market tanked and people stopped buying Rolexes for a bit) in a way that an Explorer, say, wouldn't. This is a watch that Tubbs could have worn (Crockett had his Ebel El Primero). I see that watch and I hear Whitesnake... oh, dammit, now it's Crowded House and "Don't Dream It's Over"... well it makes me reminisce.

BTW, if you're marrying a French woman, it's important to get this straight: you're the fiancé, she's the fiancée. 😉

She did a good job picking that out. 👍 That's one of the best dials they offered on those DJ's.

France, wonderful country and wonderful people.

Remember touring there many years ago with a "rough guide" 😀 ( does that one travel ? )

That's essentially how it happened, except I described myself as an olive skinned spaniard😉.

Yea, I am very happy with it. If she had told me in advance that she was buying me a birth year date-just, I would have freaked out. I strongly dislike the more common champagne dial, generally think the two-tone is too flashy and would not be able to flip it without getting smothered in my sleep. I'm still thinking I will put a strap on it to tone it down a little.

Thanks for the small clarification! There are a whole host of issues I was not aware of prior to my proposal, that my soon to be mother-in-law explained to me... like the wedding not only HAS to be be in France, but in the town of the Mother and in front of the mayor no less. 😕

All that stuff sounds as bogus as your buy-the-groom-a-watch tradition. 😀

kendrick,
Many congratulations, love your term "current fiance" I use the same expression regarding my wife but after thirty eight years maybe it's time I deleted "current"

I'm '87 too, it was an excellent year for watches, and Rolexes. The original porcelain dial Ref 16520 Daytona was '87, as was the 168000 7 month production Submariner reference as well.

Unfortunately not🙁... by law; you must conduct the civil union, obviously prior to the ceremony, in front of the mayor of the town that you currently reside in, in France, or that of a family member on either side. As a current US resident being coerced into having my ceremony in France, I have no choice but to conduct it in the town of my future mother-in-law 😵‍💫 .

Glad to see I am in good company! I was unaware that there was a notable variation on the Daytona from '87. Although, being relatively new to the watch community it shouldn't come as a surprise. I guess I have no choice but to add it to my short list😀.

No worries...you'll find they do catering much better than stateside. In any case, good idea not to start by getting contrary with the belle-mere.

Good to know! I would have assumed the opposite and very sound advice!
