·This is a 666A, the less common non-date version of these remarkable watches. If you're looking at this, you probably know about the anti-magnetic properties and Faraday cages that these models possess. This one was purchased from the son of the original owner. It was, based on my recollection of the conversation we had, serviced at the factory some 30 or 40 years ago. Which may explain the non-signed crown. When watches are sent to Schaffhausen for restoration they often come back from service without the "fish" crown. This happened to me with an 18K model I had restored years ago. When I asked, the factory rep told me that since they could no longer guarantee water resistance they were unable to use a fish crown. I was not happy with that reply and eventually found one online. Which you can do as well as ss crowns for these 666 models certainly appear online from time to time.
The other issue is the dial which is not original to the watch. It is certainly an original factory dial and age appropriate for this watch, but is not the dial that this piece started it's life with. The dial that was on this watch when I received it was ruined by an overzealous "cleaning" done by a well-intended watchmaker prior to my ownership.
Case and movement date to 1961 (movement) and "around" 1962 (case) as seen on the "date your IWC" website.
So:
Dial: Nice double signed Turler dial with homogenous patination. Most noticeable flaw is the small scratch between the 5 and 10 minute marker. There is also a bit of yellowed lacquer at 26 and 27 minute markers which is showing as pink(!?) in my dial pics. This is not seen without loupe. There is a dial plate that is made of soft iron and completes the Faraday cage in these non-date models. It is hidden beneath the dial and it is intact.
Case: Sympathetic polish that may have been done by IWC. On the case back, the oblique bevel at the top of the wrench slots is still present. This is often obliterated by careless or over polishing. Case gasket missing and should be replaced. Measures aprox. 36.3 mm
Crown: Unsigned but appears to be IWC as it looks identical to one that I have with the fish crown on a different 666
Movement: Clean and recently serviced 853, keeping good time.
Crystal: recent and original, has small internal crack seen (with loupe) at the outer edge between minutes 59 and 62
Selling head only for what I consider to be an extremely reasonable (price just reduced-again) $1600.
Please feel free to ask questions or for more pics
I take pp friends or bank transfer. Fedex/Parcelpro shipping to lower 48 is on me. Overseas will split shipping.
