What if you bought a used Swiss watch from Brazil? Would tariffs be 15% for watch plus 39% for Swiss product plus 40% for coming from Brazil?
Don't believe it's being stacked, OP in this thread has a breakdown of his Omega from Sweden, he stated having bought it for ca. 4k, and the import duties is 1681,34 so base value comes to 4,3k if is a tariff of 39% is used:

Don't believe it's being stacked, ...

So if I buy a non-Swiss watch from Brazil then I'll pay a 50% tariff, but if I buy a Swiss watch from Brazil it's only 39%.

No more Seikos from Brazil.

But you can't skip the funeral fee!
It is deducted automatically every year!

Sweden loves taxes....
🙄
Funeral fee? Does the government then cover the cost of your funeral?

Not really. It depends on the country of origin of the watch.

Theoretically, you could import an American made watch from Brazil and there would be no Trump Tariff.

Good luck with getting DHL (or any other foreign post office) to folllow that logic.

What logic? This was facetious.

Theoretically, if products are imported into the U.S. from Brazil that are not made in Brazil, they may still be subject to these tariffs if they are classified as Brazilian origin (assuming there are no other specific exemptions.)

We know a Swiss watch gets charged 39%, regardless of where it came from. I wouldn't be surprised if an industrious Customs officer decided to charge 40% on other imports from Brazil, regardless of where they were made. Not that I would buy a watch from Brazil.

I think this really illustrates how nonsensical it is to charge customs duties on these old items. If I import an old Hamilton vs an old Rolex, there is virtually no difference on the impact to the current US watch industry. And obviously Switzerland doesn't care if customs duties are charged on pre-owned Swiss-made items, so taxing them creates no leverage.

It's so clearly just being used as a federal sales tax.

roughly 1%
Wow, God must love the Swedes. You get off cheap. In Switzerland (well in Zurich, don’t know about other Cantons) the rate is 3 or 4% of your net taxable income. Can’t remember which rate applies to Catholics and which for Protestans.

Some people have posted about receiving bills later, after receipt of goods. Be aware
Indeed, That happened to me with UPS. The invoice arrived via email a day or two after delivery

I googled the answer...
😄

The funeral fee finances crematoriums, funeral chapels and burial grounds. It also goes towards the salaries of staff working in the funeral industry. Simply put, the funeral fee is used to ensure that all people, regardless of faith or religious affiliation, receive dignified treatment when they die.

I was led to believe from a Swede on the sister Tagheuer forum it was 11 weeks, not much different to what I get here in the Netherlands then (37 days).

39% sucks balls we need to do a Boston watch tea-party like what happened in the 1700's no different than the tax on tea and that created America.

The Boston Tea Party, not as cut and dried as they taught in the 8th grade!

John Hancock - Smuggling Powerhouse

John Hancock did not directly participate in the Boston tea party. But he stood to lose the most from the East India Company imports of English tea to Boston. On the other hand Samuel Adams who led the Mohawks aboard the British ships was so close to John Hancock that Bostonians even joked that "Sam Adams writes the letters [to newspapers] and John Hancock pays the postage". You do the math.

John Hancock was a wealthy shipping magnate, who made the bulk of his money illegally by smuggling. Many colonials were smugglers, Hancock just happened to have a flair for it. Because the ever-tightening British policies that came about after the French and Indian War were aimed at his sort, he wholeheartedly took part in the call for Revolution.

It was a well known fact that John Hancock had made his fortune through smuggling Dutch tea, which was cheaper than East Indian tea. A commonly forgotten fact is that East Indian prices were cut before the introduction of the three pence tax, in effect making its price, even with the tax, cheaper than Hancock’s tea. Presented with this information, many loyalists did not wonder at Hancock’s involvement in the boycotting of East Indian tea and indeed, the entire war.

After he inherited a fortune in his mid-20s, this elegant dandy nearly single-handedly bankrolled the early protests in Boston.

Hancock smuggled glass, lead, paper, French molasses and tea. In 1768, upon arriving from England, his sloop Liberty was impounded by British customs officials for violation of revenue laws. This caused a riot among some infuriated Bostonians, depending as they did on the supplies on board. In the late 1760s, he was formally charge with smuggling and although certainly guilty, his attorney was able to get Hancock relieved of all charges. The lawyer was Sam's cousin, John Adams.

Just like cars - love the EU and von der Leyen 😀

EU End-of-Life Vehicles Directive (2000/53/EC)

In some countries, a recycling fee (or “deposit”) is charged at the time of purchase, either explicitly or included in the vehicle price. This fee supports funds or systems to ensure proper disposal later.

That recycling cost is very low, at least in the Netherlands, €20 for a gasoline car, € 75 for an EV.
