I understand that watches bought from the EU now are liable for 20% VAT. Does anyone know if there is also an import duty to pay? Many thanks

There’s no additional import duty, but in addition to VAT there may be other charges, eg courier will normally charge a fee for handling the clearance. There were a couple of older threads going into this in detail, may be worth checking them out.

Assume you are importing from EU to UK

As far as I am aware eBay automatically adds the duty payable to your purchase price.

Are they correct? Or more/less is invoiced once received?

Generally yes- if it’s eBay it will be indicated and added on (e.g for GSP service, and you can see the estimate under the price or in the postage/ import tab). Other sites such as C24 I believe have it already included on the price, but worth checking. All other purchases ( eg gumtree), then you should budget for 20% on everything (price, postal cost) plus additional “processing” fees (anywhere from £7-21).

You may of course get lucky, given how busy/stretched things are at the customs points - I had 3 items recently from the same seller in Germany, one was charged the others not..

Only if the seller use ebay global shipping program.
