I'm interested in everyone's thoughts... Perfect homage re-issue, or uninspired design team?

The milking of the Speedmaster is not going to end any time soon....it's Omega's bread and butter.

Not anytime soon, you can count on that.

This piece doesn't work for me. Although I like straight lugs, and pointy hands, I see this piece as a mashup of too many things. The Golden Panda is new to me (good find RJ), with only 40 pieces, I'm assuming I'll never see it in the wild... the direct re-use of that dial doesn't bother me, its just that I don't like it to begin with, the dark minute ring around the dial... its just too "busy". If I had to pick between the 2015 FOIS or the Golden Panda, I'd pick the FOIS in a heartbeat: rose gold > yellow gold; alpha hands > baton hands; straight lugs > twisted lugs.

No story... It's the only one I've seen in a proper photo in the wild.

When given a choice between a modern reinterpretation/re-issue at silly money and a real deal vintage version at silly money I would always go with the vintage choice. Two reasons: style and capital depreciation.😉

Hey...Have I mentioned I'm still really bitter about this little slight to Gemini 4? QUOTE]

Seems quite unlike Omega to pass up what could be an amazing marketing bonanza 👎

p.s. I'm aware of my own hypocrisy having recently acquired a Speedmaster with a gold bezel..

I must say, I wish Omega would produce a few more straight-lug cases with the 1861 under the hood. The FOIS is a beautiful watch and that case is simple and magnificent.

When I first saw the new Basel FOIS, I really liked it...
Not necessarily a must have for me, but one to consider...

Then, thumbing through the moonwatch only book... I find this :

Limited to 40 pieces, exclusive to the Japanese market, released in 1997 to celebrate 40 years of Speedmaster ....
The "Golden Panda"

I still don't know what I think of this....
My initial reaction is disappointment...
I just got my book and was thumbing through it and saw the same thing. Never knew this existed though I was always aware of the special skeletized versions for the Middle East markets.

I've been thinking about a FOIS, but I think I'd just keep pining for the original.. temping though!

I just bought a Fender American Vintage 1962 Reissue in left handed. It was either $950 for a slightly used, almost-identical but modern copy made by the same company or $39,500 for an original that was beaten to hell and would need about $1,000 of work upon purchase.

The reissue was a no brainer for me. At this point in my life, I'm a user of the things I buy, not exactly a collector. Wearing a genuine pre-noon speedy with the 321/alpha hands combo would have me paranoid 24/7. Same with gigging with e '62 Strat 😁

Granted, the price difference here is not as drastic. But, still, it should be taken into consideration.

I dunno. It'll be a number of years before I start collecting super vintage items, simply because I'm too scared and poor to do that now!

I admit, I like it a lot. For me, the FOIS is the perfect modern Omega. I would not mind to have a golden version as well for a change.

Omega milking older references doesn't bother me, it's just what they are but a precious metal Speedmaster is something I find impossible to digest. For the money, I will look elsewhere.

The appeal of the FIOS is that it's a homage to the Wally Schirra Speedmaster right?

So making it in gold sorta negates the homage aspect and if you want a gold speedmaster that looks like this, you obviously don't care about the history of it, so why call it a FOIS? What market segment are they hitting?

I feel the same way about Hollywood remakes. The new Ghostbusters is just alienating fans of the original and new audiences weren't even born when the original came out and have no connection to it, so why the hell even use the name?

I agree, I love the watch... It's just the 'FOIS' that bothers me... The 'Golden Panda' had nothing to do with Wally Schirra. Yet here is virtually the same watch... 'Re-branded' ... For me it's just a little insulting... I'd love it completely it they at least acknowledged that it had been done before... Instead of pretending that it's a bold new design to honor the legacy ...
If I didn't know about the 'Golden Panda' it would be a nonissue, and my deposit would already be in... This just kind of rubs me the wrong way.

@ac106 's 'Ghostbusters' analogy is perfect... Trying to cash in on 'brand recognition ' with no true connection to the product..

Of course, I'll probably still buy one...
