I'm in the mood for something different: Breguet or Ulysse Nardin?

You said you wanted something different....
.... well here you have it! 😉😗😁

I actually saw this in person, and after seeing it, i really stopped looking at UN watches all in all...

Maybe an acquired taste, but definitely not for me.
The watch itself was not so bad, but the whole “thing” around it was just...

Come on, it's a perfect brand if you're a Russian oligarch. 🙄

Seems a bit "over the top"

UN's are quality watches but the one's made after about 1985 bear no real connection to the old-line company that was made famous for its deck chronometers. The company was stripped of all of its historical timepieces before the new owners took over in the mid-80's, even they said they were disappointed at what little physical historical documents and watches came with the company. They basically bought a name, along the lines of what Biver did with Blancpain in that same era. Or when Swatch bought the Hamilton name, it bears no real connection to the Hamilton Watch Company from Lancaster, PA. Just something to keep in mind. Don't fall in love with the history of these kinds of watches. Some companies like AP, PP, Omega and Rolex have strong continuous production since their founding, others went out of business and the names resurrected, whether that is important to you is a pesonal decision.

If I am reading you correctly, it would seem that buying a nice example of a UN from the 1960's would be a much better idea than overspending for a more recent example thinking that some of the value in the newer example derives from the UN name - do I have it right?

Only if you put a great deal of importance on the provenance of a watch. If it is important for you to have an example from the original company then you need to factor that into your purchase decision. But as many companies go downhill, production quality and standards go down as the company proceeds towards bankruptcy. I can't comment on how 1960's or 1970's UN quality compares to the quality in their heyday. Did it suffer? I don't know. That's why you can't just buy on name alone on many companies that have gone through rough times.

But as was mentioned earlier, in the era of this watch, UN were basically just assembling watches from off-the-shelf components. Obviously there is nothing wrong with an A Schild movement, but don't think you are buying something special or high-end.

In this particular competition Breguet is looking like the clear winner

I consider venturing back into the 40s. UN used FB cases quite a bit and you can get some really beautifully designed watches from that era that share a lot of aesthetic DNA with Patek.

Here’s my little chronometer with a classic Taubert style case.

Weird marker placement. XII looks way off-center. Could be the angle of the photo I guess. 😕

It’s just the photo - dial is original on this. I wouldn’t go posting a redial for the sharks to pick at on a thread like this.

If it's original, then it's saying something about UN quality. 😗

Same to you, sleep tight. Not a redial by the way. Just poorly aligned.

So do I - and you are on the wrong side of this one unfortunately. The markers are evenly placed and are even set to the curvature of the dial. Go take a look at some Patek dials on 565s with Arabic numerals. Im sure you would try to convince everyone that the 12 marker is crooked in every case. Have fun trolling the community. I’m sure everyone loves it.

Honestly, I don't care about your UN. Members can judge for themselves if the XII is centered.
