....There is no better way to do it than from the comfort off the Admiral's boat.

I had the great pleasure of spending the afternoon visiting the sights of Pearl Harbor from the bay with my daughter. I've visited the memorial a few times and it's always a sobering experience, this time was no different.

Great models in the small CINCPACFLT museum...

Beautiful views from the bay under stunning blue skies...

The "Mighty Mo"

USS Nimitz with its full air wing on deck making a short stop on it's way home to San Diego...

It was fortuitous to see the USS Nimitz in port. Nimitz was the star of one of the best science fiction movies ever made when it travels through a time warp in the ocean retuning it to December 6th, 1941, to do battle with the Japanese fleet on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

"Splash the Zeros, I say again, Splash the Zeros!!"

Walking around Ford Island it was interesting to see the strafing marks in the driveways of the Navy housing.

Beautiful day to break out the Speedmaster...

On the subbase, there's still bullet holes in various objects around the squadron building in particular. I was stationed on a submarine home ported there for the better part of six years.

Great photos, thanks for sharing. I've never been but it's on my list of places to see. Somewhere in my classroom I have an evening newspaper from Dec. 7th.

Thanks for sharing. It brings back good memories for me as I visited the USS Arizona Memorial in 1979, aged 9, during a family holiday to the USA. Even then, I could fully appreciate it's historical significance and I still recall seeing oil seeping out of the wreck. I still have two souvenirs from that trip:

A replica newspaper from that fateful day. These were sold from newspaper boxes that you put a coin in and then took out a copy.

A book on the USS Arizona which was purchased all those years ago.

I can walk into any church on the planet and think "OK, big deal".

I visited the Alamo Memorial, and the sense of historical reverence was palpable.

I visited the Arizona Memorial, and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up.
An amazingly emotional experience, and I'm not prone to emotion.

Next time visiting Pearl Harbor, try to include Ford Island museum. Evidence of some of the first shots fired on the base are still visible here.
I was finally able to assemle that missing perspective from all those old movies (TORA TORA TORA, MIDWAY) with this tour. My personal photos were deleted during phone replacement. If you are interested in military aircraft, this is a pretty good museum.

@gearjockey we absolutely made the trip to Ford Island as well as visiting the museum. The control tower was recently renovated and opened so we made a visit to view the island from the top.

Funny you mention the movie Tora Tora Tora. My father was a damage control man stationed in San Diego when the movie was made. They used Navy personnel in many of the scenes. My father can be seen in the movie pulling a fire hose on board the Arizona after it’s attacked.

I visited there in about 1998 or 1999. The Missouri had just arrived and was not officially on display yet ( if I remember correctly). I really enjoyed the Arizona tour but all these years later I'm still saddened about the conduct of the people visiting. They seemed to have a party attitude , making lot's of noise running around etc. Didn't they realize (Or care) that they were standing over a graveyard????

I thought the visitors during my recent visit and previous ones were pretty respectful and the visitors were well aware of where they were and what they were visiting. My only thing would be wearing a hat while on the memorial. That said, on the Admiral's boat we were well briefed on how to act and what to wear. There were only 6 on board. Active military in dress uniform and civilians in collard shirts, long pants, and closed toed shoes.
