IDGuy asks if older SMPs are better...

As I am looking at a white version of the current SMP 300, I was searching on YT for videos about Seamaster.

As I was still awake at 4am this morning, I came across IDGuy's video where he asks if older SMPs are better than the current model. I admit he does make some compelling arguements in favour of the older ones.

Can anyone here weigh in?

IDGuy is pretty cringe. He's a content spammer. In almost every video, he talks over stock photos/videos, basically telling you he has no experience with any of the watches and it's just his opinion based on the content he reads online, which you could do yourself. Imagine a critic telling you Movie A is better than Movie B when all he's seen are the trailers. That's IDGuy.

In my experience, the only thing better on the older Seamaster is the bracelet in terms of wearability. Subjectively, the size including thinness is better, but that varies based on your personal preference.

SMP in order of awsomeness:

2254/2255 Sword Hands and variants> 2531 Original Bond> 3rd Gen SMPc> Current 4th Gen SMP> Second Gen with 2500

That's my take. YMMV as ever.

Better is always in the eye of the beholder. Things going for the older SMP300 Bond:

1. It is considerably thinner and the lug-to-lug is shorter as well.
2. Bracelet is thinner and less heavy.
3. Can generally be serviced by more local watchmakers who have an Omega parts account but are not certified for co-axial service. This can make service easier.
4. Cheaper to buy

Things against it:

1. Bracelet uses pins/collars and is a pain to adjust yourself, even with the proper tools. Very easy to lose a collar or bend a pin if you are into too much of a hurry or use cheap tools.
2. No micro-adjust on clasp.

Value wise I think the two stars are the third gen 2500D ceramic as they’re just so durable yet cheap, and the titanium electric blue sword hands variant is probably my personal favourite because titanium is cool and so are electric blue dials.

Incidentally we filmed the third gen ceramic nearly 10 years ago, it’s just a short close up video of it but we’ll try to cover more in the future in longer form like the more recent videos.

It takes us some time but we do them all with the watch in person.

Still the best version in my opinion. The non-tapering bracelet is a bit dated and too chunky for my taste, and you have to be careful with the AR coating on the outside of the crystal, but the watch itself is exceptional and the dial is a stunner.

The newer Omega mesh bracelet pairs really well with the 3rd Gen SMPc

I have a 2255 that I added the adjustable clasp to and its perfect (no mods needed)... I have had more modern versions but have moved them along, I've always thought the older sword hand SMPs were perfect. the addition of an adjustment in the bracelet sealed the deal as a keeper.

Well, it could be worse. Everything in IDGuy videos could be AI-generated. Or maybe it already is.

I made it halfway through the video. It was unpleasant. That guy can definitely drone on and on without saying much.

Anyways, after having owned multiple examples from every generation of the Seamaster Professional 300m, I still think the 2531.80 is the best version of the SMP.

And because no one has posted any pictures:

this is the SMP they should have made.
Sword hands, wave dial in electric blue with blue bezel.
Mine has the longer adjustable PUSH clasp and blue bezel insert.

I own the old and the new. In theory I prefer the old one, because of the smaller diameter and width...BUT when I have both in my hands I opt for the new one without any doubt...it is like emanates better quality...design..I can´t explain clearly...just try to ´touch´ them both.

My 2531.80 is a perfect fit.
When I tried a modern Seamaster on a couple of years ago I was underwhelmed. The news ones are stunning, especially the summer blue but they just don't suit me 🙁

Id guy has a video praising the 2254. This make me feel all warm and fussy inside. Great confirmation that I have bought the right watch.
