I Went to Rolex and All I Got Was This Lousy Spoon... (Updated with watch porn)

I’ve found lots of those spoons at flea markets and antique shows over the years, and I collected them until I had about 40. Gradually sold them when I trimmed down on watch paraphernalia.

I didn’t ever get one as a gift, and never in a venue as memorable as your trip to Bucherer. Yours to me would be a special spoon indeed.

It was a nice wedding/Honeymoon gift ...... 'cause we all know spooning leads to forking
Lol. There was definitely a lot of that going on! 😁

Thanks. It's definitely a keeper as it brings back a lot of good memories. The way things are going with Rolex supply/demand at the moment, I may not end up getting one of their watches until my 50th wedding anniversay!

I'm pretty sure it's an early bubble back spoon, highly collectable and worth at least twice what you paid.

Methinks it’s time for Omega to up the ante with a Limited Edition spork 😉

Until it's not...

(If we are using Bubble back analogies, we should go all the way) 😉

Does anyone know the story on these spoons? They are all over Etsy.

What goes up, has come down - The Rolex Bubbleback story...

A cautionary tale for any collector who thinks the value of Rolex is only going to go up...

As I understand it, they were gifted to customers by the Bucherer chain of Swiss jewelry stores that operated in various Swiss cities. The spoons are marked with the names of the cities (Lucerne, Lausanne, Geneva, Lugano etc,) and the designs (drawn from the cities’ coats of arms I think), changed over the years. I am not sure how long these were offered, but it was decades.

They were also gifted in a set. As I recall, this was three spoons; might have been four, in a presentation box. I’ve only ever seen one of these.

They are not hard to find individually when you prowl flea markets, or dig into the (cheap) souvenir spoon bins that most antique stores seem to have. Some sellers have an inflated idea of how rare and valuable they are.

They are absolutely a fun collectable.

Why do people refer to that watch as a Spork? Is it an acronym?

The Seiko "Spork" is also known as the SRP043, the SRP043K, the SRP043K1, and the SRP043K2. At least that's how many versions I have seen in various selling listings. The nickname "Spork" has a few origins I am aware of: one is that it is a combination of a Diver watch case and a Pilot watch dial, making it similar to a combination Spoon and Fork Spork that one uses when camping. The other origin of the nickname is through a rearranging of the letters "SRP043K" to come up with Spork.

I always just thought it was a rearranging of the model name, hadn't heard about the pilot/diver variation.

Was passing through Melbourne Airport in Australia on my way to Singapore and dropped in to Watches of Switzerland there. This time I scored a nice catalogue and had the opportunity to try on my "grail" piece, the GMT Pepsi. Sadly, I found it a bit too thick and chunky on my wrist but the Explorer fit a lot better. The staff there were lovely. Very polite and none of the arrogance that I've heard some people experience at a Rolex AD. Fun way to kill a bit of time.
