I think this one looks pretty good 145.022

As noted by previous threads here on OF, the pushers on a Speedmaster will be between the 2&3 and 3&4

For the fun of it I looked at the same year Speedmasters on Chrono24. Sure were many for sale were the pushers are not in this position and had a sale price of little over $2K. Are these of suspect nature?

I suspect the ~$2K watches you are referring to are Speedmaster Reduceds (39mm case, automatic movement). It’s pretty easy to spot the differences between these and Speedy Pros once you are aware (sub-dials further apart, pusher offset from crown, etc.). However, some unscrupulous sellers do try to pass these off as “moonwatches” to the uninitiated.

I believe this one to be a approx 1988 model as it is a 48 serial, high letter S and R, and with the bigger size font on the TACHYMETRE. Later ones have the wide and low and wide S letter, smaller TACHYMETRE font and sans serif bezels. Just my thoughts...

Or does the watch have its serial number etched on the case? Then this can be a very early 90ies model.

You really won’t find a true honest Speedmaster Professional from the 80ies in this condition for 2000USD really often any more. So 3000USD sounds to me quite right if the watch has been serviced.

A Extract of the Archives will provide more info when the watch was produced.

Do you have the serial number on the movement? This helps determine the year of production. My thoughts are that this is a late 80’s model instead of a 90’s as the dial has the Long S letter, newer model bracelet as well as the serif bezel. But a serial will definitely be needed for further info.

I thought the 1479 bracelet that this watch has wasn't used until around 1991 or so? Earlier than that and it should have a 1450. It's obviously possible that it could have been swapped due to the popularity of the 1450, but the 1479 is reasonably valuable these days too.

Wait til the tritium from the '90s is 40 years old like the '70s lume is nowadays... probably will look about the same (with minor variations for batches, producers etc). Like us, lume continues to age

Oh sure, but the lume on these watches looks older now than the lume on my '76, which still has a slightly greenish cast to it, and is far whiter. I tend to doubt that once it's started to yellow it goes back to looking less aged.

Something about the batch or producer of lume they used in the early '70s made those go a little greenish. Lots of -71s and -76s I've personally handled have been so, and the few -74s I've found seem to have gone in a similar direction

The ‘91 Omega I purchased is the 145.022. I also see ‘91 Speedmasters that are 3590.50.00

Is either one more desirable to a those interested in Omega Speedmasters?

I was expecting my watch from FedEx today. Guess Monday is the day. Last two from the dealer arrived in 24 hours after wire.

Ok, now I understand the difference, the 145.022 has different material for hour markers and hand. The 145.022 will give you the aged patina vintage look. That is what I like, so I made a good choice in my own opinion

I think I am the only guy who thinks it's crazy that a 20-30 year-old watch is the same price as a new watch. I seem to be in the minority to think I am better off with a new product, and make my own history with it.

With that said, if an older watch is your preference, enjoy! 😀

Doubt you are the only guy who think that way! New has many advantages such as new warranty, latest movement, all new accessories, etc. However there is special charm on vintage pieces. Many of use started with newer pieces and made our way to the vintage world. Buy what you like and enjoy it! 😉

Look at that patina and character, I'll take that 30 yr. speedy any day over a shiny, white washed luminova lume....just personal preference tho.

Not that it matters what I think, I check the website everyday. Last month HQ has had several Speedsters from the late 70’s, the 80’s and early 90’s with the nice creamy markers and hands. They all get snatched up the same day. Speedmaster from these eras with the patina are pretty handsome devils.

Dont worry in 20 years your "new" watch will be vintage and have plenty of patina 😉

Just noticed, but hands are service and not original (usually they disclosed, i guess they miss that)
