I need help deciding...

Hi,

I am in the market for a new watch. I thought I may be learning towards the "creamsicle" PO, but after going to my AD and trying it on, I wasn't really feeling it. I feel as if the orange bezel might not age well. I did really like the blue 39.5mm PO after trying it on. The size was just about perfect on my wrist and would be a very strong contender for daily wear.

At this point, I am in between the 39.5 PO, or the Sapphire Speedmaster. I love the manual chrono, and I love the idea of having a Seamaster and Speedmaster in the collection.

I currently own the SMP Chrono in black, and it's just a little too big for daily wear even though I do love it. I wish I got it in blue, and I do wish I had just got the non-chrono. I'm "worried" that adding the speedy pro would be a little too redundant (two black dial chronos), even though they are definitely different watches. I like the idea of having some variety (i.e., different colored dials, one chrono, one regular dive watch, etc.). The speedy would be for more "formal" occasions (going into the office, a night out, etc.), while the Seamaster would be for everything else.

Curious to hear your thoughts. Keep the SMP chrono and buy the PO? Get the Speedy now and wait for the PO in the future? Part ways with the SMP chrono, and buy both? Ultimately, at the end of the day, I do want a speedmaster in the collection.

Yes. If I were you, I'd ditch your current SMP, pick up the Speedy, and replace the SMP with one you like better once you get rid of the your other SMP.

Probably a stupid question but have you tried the speedy on? I would try all of them on and see which one speaks to you the most. They all wear so differently on wrist. All I wanted was a Rolex OP, then I gave up and decided (from photos) that I wanted a De Ville sub seconds, then when I tried them on I fell in love with the CK859. Thought I loved Grand Seikos until I tried them on and (of the ones I tried on) I just didn't feel it. For me it's all about how they feel (and how they make you feel) when on wrist.

Yes, I have tried them all on. I've determined that I don't mind a larger watch, so long as there are some dimensions that are reasonable (i.e., lug to lug may be large, but don't mind if the thickness is manageable, etc.). My current chrono is just too big in every dimension for my 6.5" wrists.

I really love the 39.5mm PO on the wrist, but I do think I want a white dial. The SMP with white dial is a definite contender. Wish the PO had a white dial variant with a more manageable bezel color.

The speedy is beautiful and just feels so different. Thin, lightweight, etc.

Sounds like you have lost the love for the SMP chrono, so I vote selling it and buying the 39mm PO and the Speedy Pro. If you go grey market and pick up the last gen Speedmaster Pro with the 1861 movement, you probably won’t have to add too much to your budget.

If you feel the chrono is too large you'll possibly never warm to it unfortunately. The normal SMP wears a lot smaller despite still being 42mm. It's a lot thinner than the chrono as well as not being as wide. I've a sub seven inch wrist and still find it very wearable.

Sounds like you really want a speedy so seems like that's a safe choice.

In relation to SMP with white dial vs 39.5 PO, I'd take my time if I were you. I'd go try them both on again and see which one you think about more over a few weeks. The chono is looking like an expensive mistake (happens most people so just chalk it down to experience and move on) so you want to avoid another one.

Whatever you choose, good luck with it and make sure to post photos!

Here's my advice, because you seem to have a recurring case of buyers remorse- sit down and write out EXACTLY what criteria a collection of one watch must have. Dimensions & size, color, work vs play vs formal, does it fit under your most common dress shirts, &c &c &c. Make a solid list. Put the most important criteria at the top: For example, if diameter size is the single most important criteria, then that should be an automatic pass/fail. Or if it's color. Or whatever your most important criteria is. As you move down your list, it should decrease in importance. That's how I'd recommend doing it.

Also- this is not a criticism of you. We've all been there- we've all been excited to own some "thing," gotten it, and realized it wasn't exactly what we wanted. Pretty sure... that's what being human is about on some fundamental level.

I'm personally of the opinion that both of the watches you have your eyes mostly on, the blue PO and the Speedy pro- will work in *ANY* situation. Neither one is too dressy, or not dressy enough. It's ultimately going to come down to how you feel about the watch, not which of these you buy. I want you to understand that if you are purchasing a 5k+ watch, it's essentially already a formal piece of jewelry.

Nobody else can make the decision of which watch is a best fit for you and for your look. We're talking about a very expensive piece of personal equipment that more or less functions as a piece of the image you choose to represent to others.

Once you have made your decision, commit to wearing that watch for two weeks. Try it with different outfits. In different lightning. &c &c &c.

If you can find the watch that could be your daily wearer, then it becomes a heck of a lot easier for you to find the watches that supplement this.

And that's totally going to be about you and your style.

Good luck!

I have owned a number of Speedmasters. Down to one now and I will always have one in my collection, but be reminded that the Speedmaster is NOT a small watch. To quote my friend, JWRosenthal, it can wear like a dinner plate. I have large wrists and I wear mine with a strap, so it fits just fiine, but it's a big watch. For me, the sweet spot is anywhere between 36mm (a/k/a/ vintage size large) and 41mm (a/k/a modern size medium). If you want a Seamaster in your collection, I'd encourage you to look at and try on the Seamaster 300 Heritage. I recently purchased one. It's 41mm with Omega's best technology and a vintage vibe. I'm really enjoyiing it.

Can confirm, this is objectively the best answer. This watch will go with anything, anywhere, anytime, anyday. 😁

but unfortunately watches are all about subjectivity. 😜

I got a 3861 Sapphire Sandwich in July of 21, have worn it every day since. Previously had a 1861 and the 3861 wears and feels MUCH smaller, slightly thinner and the difference the new bracelet (IMHO) makes a world of difference in comfort and weight. I just ordered the new adjustable clasp. It's exceptionally accurate and a total delight. The only attention it gets is from those who know what it is. It's a classic, simple and elegant face that I enjoy every day, the history really speaks to me.
Was contacted by my OB today (4/6/23), clasp is now backordered until the end of May, disappointed, but in today's world, expected. Patience is required.

Thanks, everyone for the replies. After a few weeks and multiple visits to the AD, I settled on the 3861 Sapphire Sandwich. They had just taken delivery the day before with the new clasp, so that's a plus!

This watch wears so much different than my seamaster chrono. Almost like I'm not even wearing a watch. Love it!
