·Looks like you're new to the forum. Additional context would be helpful such as what watches he wears today, how he prefers to dress, his wrist size and how much you want to spend.
Making a bunch of assumptions that he's ok with smaller watches and not rough with them, a vintage Oyster or Datejust is a good affordable choice. If you want a modern Rolex and want a chance of getting one from an AD, a Datejust is probably your best bet.

·From my part, I wouldn't view OP's post as a negative - not that there's anything positive about it neither.. Everyone has freedom to join and post whatever they like, also everyone else can feel and post whatever they like about those threads - within the rules of the forum. I don't think the replies in this post represent in any meaningful way this community's 92,649 members, of whitch most just ignore such non-informative one-off post's that don't give any meaningful content or opportunity to give any genuine opinions. Just my 2 c.

·Best watch for a 80 year old is the one he picks himself. Make a day of it and give him a choice of any watch he wants (within your budget). Probably wants a Seiko he didn’t buy when he was younger. 😁

·A mechanical, automatic wind watch for an 80 year old? Depends on the level of activity of the particular 80 year old! You wouldn’t want the watch stopping regularly from having run down. Maybe consider an Oysterquartz for him.
