Since I hadnt heard from the seller after a day, I contacted eBay today and initiated the refund request. They ensured me that I'm fully covered, so all good.

This caused the seller to respond, though. That's the translation of the full message, bar the first name:

"I bought the watch as a gift a while ago and reused the pictures. Would you agree to a 20€ discount?"

did I see the same movement serial number 27367736 on the listing photo and the one you actually received?

Hello Matt, the dial on the original ebay ad was reprinted while the one he sent you is good 😁.
Look at the geneve writing

I think it's fair if you transplant the movement into an even worse case when you send it back.

Be hard to find a suitable transplant candidate I'd imagine.

@apsm100 Same serial, different case. The movement was transplanted (and parts of it changed, as spotted by @JimInOz)

@flqt-9000 Thanks Flavio, I know - read above 😀

@jsducote If he refuses to take it back and has to be forced through eBay I shall consider it! ::stirthepot::

Get your money back. It’s just easier and this watch will always be tainted with a bad experience… Unless…. Unless he wants to give you a really significant chunk of your money back.

The buyer wants to repaint the dial, they can surely have most of the case polished, buffed, refinished… If you can get a really good deal on that watch then it could be worth hanging onto.

still probably better to just send it back though.

To add to the mystery, are these in fact two totally different movements?

Look at the difference in distance between the right-side foot of the Omega logo and the “1” in the 601 stamp. Yes, one photo is taken from a slight angle, which distorts the comparison somewhat, but the “1” on the eBay listing looks closer to the foot.

I could see it being the angle plus the HDR or whatever other creative liberty the “original” photos had.

Contact ebay/paypal and work with them to return the watch and get your money back. Still a hassle though. Good luck.

By now it must be obvious that the seller photoshopped the serial no of the actual watch into the movement pic of the watch he advertised.

As far as scams go, this is however not a good example to make a big fuss about. The watch advertised (the pictures, that is), even if you consider the case only, insofar as you can glean anything from the hazy pics, was obviously never worth 300 €. It was redialled trash. Look at those areas:

The watch the OP received IS actually worth 300 €.

was the watch returned to the seller ?

It’s still on the way or might have arrived today. Not sure.

On the phone, eBay said they wouldn’t act on it as long as it’s just the one time this happened. I’ll call them again on Monday and make sure they’re aware the seller is doing the exact same thing again.

Seller has sent me a message, ranting about my negative review and called me a “shabby human”. Ignoring the foul language, I explained to her that the reason I’ve decided to leave the review was her doing the same thing again. No response yet.

She did not inform eBay about having received the watch back. So they manually approved my refund and are now investigating her for fraud.

Meanwhile, the auction has been removed. Case closed, as far as I am concerned.
