I just recently purchased this on Ebay. Is this authentic?

Dial looks OK, case is beat to hell.

Without a movement or inside caseback picture, it is impossible to answer your question.

Hope you didn’t pay too much.

Authentic, but in rough shape and not a particularly desirable reference. I think that you paid at least 2x what it's worth. Next time you may want to post questions before buying.

I'd try and see if i still can return the item if possible. See if the seller is willing to give you a partial refund or a full refund - some restocking fee or stuff...

Not THAT expensive of a rookie mistake. You could have been browsing for pateks. 😁

Just clean the thing up and wear it. It's an original vintage Omega so things aren't that bad and at least you're in the game now!

Additionally, let's not all forget that well lit digital close-ups can make most any watch look worse than when on the wrist. From your pictures that watch may not really be in such bad shape after all. the pictures from the back show the lug edges are not all gouged or dinged up and i'm willing to bet a good detailing with a toothpick cleaning on the crystal edges, some crystal polishing and a general rubbing the watch with a jewelry polishing/cleaning cloth will make that thing look 100% better. At least you got the thing in what appears to be "as-found" condition and it wasn't fluffed up by some ham-fisted shyster for the sale.

I will most definitely take heed to your advice. What would be an honest price to list this watch after I cleaned it up a bit?

What I do with watches that I bought in package deals like a cowboy and have too much into them is rather than lose on them, I save them up and horse-trade them with other hunters and gatherers like myself. Sometimes that is better than selling outright for a loss. Patience is the key so if you're not desperate for the $450 just clean the watch up, wear it and wait for when opportunity comes.

Absolutely right about photos. The slightest mark the eye would never notice is highlighted. It will clean up as @janice&fred advise but you must be realistic too.

This is a fifty year old watch which was worn and treasured. It’s not a high end watch that’s been kept in the safe apart from two or three usages per year.

If you want a pristine and unworn looking watch for under £1000, either buy a new one or a higher end used one.

If I were you, and I appreciate I’m not, I’d do as @janice&fred suggest and then give it a good wearing.

The value of these is increasing, as a quick look on eBay or Chrono24 will show you. I’m afraid I disagree with @Dan S on value. They’re increasingly collectible and if I could pick 'em up for around $200 I’d buy a drawerful of them. $350-450 is not so wide of the mark.

Remember the old saying from a pal of mine who deals in construction equipment..."You didn't lose as you haven't sold it yet".

The thing about even the least desirable Omegas is that they are very wearable. Whenever I wear an Omega it turns at least one head every few minutes, and I don't mind in the least that it's my own.

Enjoy it - it's a classy piece of wrist-wear.

I've seen a good few of these 040 Geneve's and I've never seen that caseback inscription before. Interesting, I would be curious to see what is on the inside. Usually they just say 'Waterproof' on the back but the plated ones are more rarely seen. Maybe the others were so beaten up it had rubbed off! These are often knocked about, they were an entry level piece when new and weren't always cared for.

I assumed at the outset that this is a Geneve, based on the case, but the dial doesn’t say 'Geneve', also it doesn’t look like a redial and, although I’m not at all certain, the caseback looks akin to some of the casebacks I think I’ve seen on Seamaster Geneve watches. So, not easily pigeonholed.

Others may know more about this than me and I still think it looks worth buying and wearing.
