I’m thinking about getting my first Omega

I’m strongly considering the speedmaster 57 co-axial master chronometer chronograph 40.5 men’s watch black. The black face with the dial colors is what really drawing me in.

I don’t need the chronograph feature but I do like the color on the face and I would like to have the date. Are there any other watches that would fit that or is the speedmaster the one?

The black aqua terra is probably the closest you'll get if you want a date. Arrow hand and similar hour markers. The '57 is a pretty unique watch though.

What do you mean by unique?

The two counters racing 329.30.44.51.01.001 speedy is "similar" because it has two subdials, is black, and has the date window in the 6 o'clock position. However, the hands are closer to modern speedy, it has a racing theme running the circumference of the dial, and lacks the "vintage" lume. It also has a black bezel.

The broad arrow hour marker, vintage lume, two subdials, date, and stainless bezel are all things that make the Speedmaster '57 quite different in appearance vs. most speedies. The Broad arrow 3551.50.00 has three subdials and no vintage lume, and the Replica 3594.50 has three subdials and no date. Going back into vintage and much more expensive watches you'll find some that are similar, but not much modern that really looks like the '57. There may be other modern speedies that are similar, I'm far, FAR from a Speedmaster expert.

Oh, the Speedmaster 57 Trilogy 311.10.39.30.01.001 but it has 3 subdials, and no date. In a lot of ways the closest thing to the '57. Both the Railmaster and Seamaster Trilogies are similar as well in general colorways, but have obviously different appearance in terms of markers and neither is a chronograph.

If the date window is an "essential" piece of your criteria for owning a watch, there's not really any reason to look at the Trilogies.

As a last point- Almost nobody "needs" the chronograph feature. Almost nobody "needs" the tachymetre, either. Heck, nobody really needs the date, or even the watch. This is 2023, and most of us probably have a cell phone in our pockets that fill all of those functions, and a cheap quartz casio can also do all of these things. Don't steer away or from buying your first Omega because you "don't need" a feature- you're buying a very expensive piece so that it will *say* something about you personally. Make sure it says what you want, then enjoy the features it has and put them to work- or don't.

I mean there's not much like it in the current catalogue. The answer above is a lot more comprehensive than mine. I would consider the trilogy collection as noted above but not if you have to have a date.

At the end of the day you need to try it on and see if it gives you that feeling. If it does buy it, who cares if you never use the chrono? If it doesn't keep looking. The hunt is often the most fun part!

Exactly this. if you're going to drop several thousand dollars on a watch, it better "give you that feeling." We're talking about a piece of personal equipment that costs as much as a used mid 2000s Honda. IMO the most important criteria is that you love it.

From your description, I am assuming you like the yellowish (aged) lume plots and broad arrow hands on the black dial Speedmaster 57. If you could settle for no date, the Seamaster 300 heritage has the same hands, same type of dial, and is about the same size. It’s also several thousand dollars cheaper, has better water resistance, and has a rotating bezel that can be used for timing as well.

But it doesn’t have a date. If that is critical and you like the aged-dial look and hands on the Speedmaster 57, that’s about your only option.

This thread seems tailored to cue my raving love (honeymoon going strong 3-months in) for the black sandwich dial version. The in-boutique experience is quite different from the web photos, and the daily wear of this has been excellent. It’s been glued to me, to be honest.
