How to clean Modern Speedy

I used the search feature, and all I could find was “clean example of a [enter random watch name here]”

lol

Anyway, with my Rolex, I let it sit in warm water for a bit, then clean it using dawn dish soap and a soft toothbrush.

How do you all clean your modern Speedy?

That watch of yours will be the most loved and cosetted and written about watch in the whole history of horology.

For the love of all that is holy please wear it for a while and enjoy it 👍

You will probably get a lot of answers and varying opinions. I don't have a modern Speedy, but rather a vintage one... thus no sitting in warm water.

1. Lightly clean with a moisten micro fiber cloth
Steps 2 -4 only necessary due to excessive build up of dirt and debri
2. Use Palmolive or like gentle cleanser and scrub gently with ultra soft toothbrush
3. Use a second ultra soft toothbrush with just water and clean off excess suds
4. Dry first with air canister from a distance, then dry with micro fiber cloth

I have OCD

When I'm finished with a watch and ready for a change I use a soft tissue wetted with alcohol, followed by a wipeoff with a clean microfiber towel. That's all. I seldom soak a watch under running water and detergent unless I've just had a 50 mile trek outside on a hot 105 degree day in the summer. And that does't happen too often these days.

Haha.

I like my watches and I like learning about them and reading about them.

I’ve been wearing it for a few days now!

I was being sincere in my previous reply. What might the next thread on that watch be about...

On the advice of an expert, I inject mine with bleach and expose it to ultraviolet light.

I never let mine get dirty. They stay in their box except for one day of the year, my birthday.

So you wear multiple watches on your birthday?

Wear the watch, enjoy the watch and when it is dirty, it will take a while, give it a gentle wash and brush up using warm water some liquid soap and the softest toothbrush you can find, then rinse and leave to dry.

Thank you all for the useful replies.

I just want to add, I don’t think we wear the watches the same way.

Some of you all are acting as if I’m over exaggerating and am freaking out about the watch getting dirty, and saying it won’t get dirty for a while.

I wear my few watches daily. All day.

To garden, pour cement, cut lumber, fix the faucet, grind metal down, weld stuff, mop my home, go to spinning class, play badminton, go for a jog, in the sauna, hiking, and sometimes work on my car.

That’s why I’m asking. I suspect here in a week or two my watch will be a little gross, and I will need to clean it.

I know a lot of watch guys wear their “luxury watch” to a nice date, and to the movies and that’s it.

I do the opposite.

That’s why I’m asking for cleaning advice.

Not because I baby the watch, but because I will use it A LOT and for everything.

I'm ready for a nap just reading what you do.

Well done you. How do you find time for OF? 😉 👍

You have also told us previously that you have a rolex, a timex and a seiko. Presumably you wear them hard too and manage to clean them afterwards. Don't see your speedy being any different.

I also remember you bought and ultrasonic cleaner too for bracelets and the like so I suggest you know what to do really even if you lack the confidence of your convictions.

Thanks for the reply!

The difference is that my Datejust and Seiko are both at least 100m waterproof. The Timex Marlin, that one doesn't really get worn in active situations because of the leather band. I do treat that one as if it were a fancy dress watch.

I was asking simply because the Speedy isn't as waterproof as the Datejust and the Seiko. Those I can leave in a small bowl of warm water over night and not worry about them, and with the Speedy, I don't know if that is the case.

How do you all clean your modern Speedy?

Same way I clean any watch with 50M or greater water resistance!

Run the water and get the watch wet.

Squirt some Dawn onto a wet, nylon bristle brush.

Scrub watch vigorously front and back including bracelet.

Rinse.

Dry with microfiber cloth.

Never once have I had water intrusion, including on the Speedmaster.
