How-to buying my first Speedy Pro?

The Speedmaster's look hasn't changed in years but the bracelet has certainly improved. I'd recommend buying new from an OB or AD and getting the full 5 year warranty. You can buy cheaper on the grey market but you don't know how its been handled and you often don't have an Omega warranty. These watches, even at full retail, are not that highly priced that you should be forced to go on the secondary market. If you don't have the scratch to buy new just save a little more for it.

I bought a new one at an OB and it was a great decision. Love the idea that it’s iconic and it’s mine. And as you’ll see, it’s a relative bargain. Buy and enjoy!

For the best "value", I'd hang around the forums and buy a very new, like new one. Every so often a private seller or dealer will have one for sale on the forum that looks like it was worn for about a week and then the buyer had remorse.

This will allow you to get an essentially BNIB speedy at 100's off

1) Buy a passible beater on the cheap, wear it for a year. If it suits me, sell it for what I paid for it and get a NIB.
2) buy a nice used one and pick up a few different bands to keep it fresh.
or
3) Drop the cash, buy a new one and dont look back.

How about this option?

4) Drop the cash, buy a nice vintage one from the late 70s, wear it for a year. If it doesn't suit you, sell it for significantly more than what you paid for it and get a totally different vintage watch.

I would look for a 3570 in near mint to mint condition. Reputable people are always selling them on the forums and even eBay, just make sure you do your homework. That’s probably where you will get the best price. Online watch retail stores like Crown and Caliber also sell them for a bit more but you get the comfort of buying from an “official” establishment. If you’re conscientious about money, I wouldn’t buy brand new from an OB as the watch will depreciate heavily.

Only if PROOF of full service. Otherwise, once you factor in the cost of a full service you cannot beat like new.

Just to close the loop here, it took me a year but I bought one new and absolutely love it!

Just as importantly I really enjoy the story how I got it:
Last month I was in Tokyo for work and a number of colleagues had impressive mechanical watches: Panerai, Hublot, IWC etc.
One of them referred me to a shopping center near Nakano station where there are loads of watch shops. New, Used, various brands etc.
I wasn't specifically planning to buy anything that day but I found a suuuuuper low price at this store called JackRoad.
Duty Free brought the price further down another few hundred dollars.

The manufacturer's 5 year warranty is honored globally.

I couldn't be more pleased.

The presentation box hardly fit in my luggage on the return flight!

Nakano station was pretty nuts.
They had this daytona on display like it was nothing. No security or anything...
To save you the calculations, 27,727,273JPY is over $250k
and that wasn't even the most expensive on display
(The most expensive one was a boring looking patek but surely had a good amount of history associated with it...)

Awesome! Glad you finally pulled the trigger.
Crazy to see how much $$$ in watches just sitting there in those cases.

Yeah, congrats! Beautiful watch.

The reason that Daytona was sitting there with no security is because it is so ugly, no one would risk prison over it.
