How robust is the Speedmaster moon watch?

Don't shower with it on and don't swim any deeper than like 5 metres with it on (no diving and also assuming it's had its seals recently checked over within say 12 months)

Also, don't ever operate the chronograph underwater.

The modern Speedmaster is rated for 50 m, so it can go deeper than 5 m without issue as long as the seals are good.

Hey Al, is there a thread here where you discuss water resistance? I've read a lot of conflicting information, mostly that WR ratings aren't what they appear...

Yes, many threads I'm sure - both here and at other forums. Omega ratings are what they say they are, so if they say 50 m, they actually mean 50 m. You can believe someone on the internet, or you can look at what Omega actually says...

Thank you all. I guess because the watch felt light, I felt it to be fragile. Thanks for all the replies. It sure does look like a hardy watch especially the stories i am reading. And wow great work on the restorations.

These questions often puzzle me, because everyone seems to forget that there was a time before quartz watches when everyone who wore a watch, wore a mechanical watch of some kind, and they were used for all kinds of activities. I realize many mechanical watches are "luxury" items now, but before that they were just watches you wore every day.

This one came to me after being run over by a car in a parking garage...customers photo he sent when he asked if I would take the job, and I agreed:

It needed a few parts certainly, as there was some damage:

Disassembled:

Movement serviced:

Final assembly:

If it can take being run over by a car and only need relatively minor repairs, then I would say it's pretty robust for every day wear. 😉

Cheers, Al
that's pretty fantastic

I hope you are joking, but if not, do the math. Remember to show your work. 😉

You joking right? The whole status vs dynamic water rating has be debunked - but would be happy to see your theory to prove it wrong 😀

I'm sorry I went there fellas. The water resistance thing has been argued and beaten up on other, far less congenial internet forums.

You will attract sharks and get eaten. And then water in your speedy will only be an issue for your heirs, and not until after the shark has finished digesting it. 😁

Q: What are you wearing today?

A: My "shark poop" Speedmaster.

I'm sure we will see models coming up with that description (at a premium of course) sometime in the near future...

Apparently "B-but..... ?!?1" doesn't trigger the sarcasm filter these days :/

Well, I thought it was funny....

Oh, whew... I heard your watch spontaneously combusts if you swim too fast with it on

Yep, that's why I wouldn't wear a moonwatch swimming. A full-on shark attack would scratch the hell out of the hesalite. Far better to have a sapphire model.

As a recreational scuba divers I often go to a depth of 20 - 30 m. I rarely encounter people who go to beyond about 40 m. Yet this chart suggests a minimum of 200 m rating for a watch for scuba diving. That seems very, very conservative. I understand the watch are tested for their rating (and beyond), why so conservative then?

If you had tried for years with what feels like 50,000 posts explaining it, funny isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

Having said that, since this is not WUS, I was at least 50% sure you were joking, but not more than that. 😉

You are assuming it's related to depth...but it's not. I don't think you will find an Omega that has a proper dive bezel that is rated for less than 200. I also believe this is what ISO specs for dive watches mandate.

For rock climbing I'd wear a $20 Casio or Timex. For everything else - Speedmaster.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch can withstand Hooters scoffing, wife unit [MacGyverette] scoffing as well as "other pilots" scoffing...which is pretty dang good in my book...

Good to see some "real life experiences" with the Speedy! When I visited and AD to test both the Speedy Pro and Aqua Terra he was very biased toward Aqua Terra since it had a "much more robust movement that won't break". I'm sure he was right about that, but the Speedmaster is a very robust watch and although it relies on a bit older technology, it still does its job very well in my opinion!
