How Omega mind set should be with their watches

Tim makes great points on how Omega marketing and overall direction could be a lot stronger. I agree they should reduce the amount of different watches they offer. They also need their designs to have more consistency over the years. Their designs should not change so often.

I like Omega specifically because they are not Rolex. It could be argued that they take more risk with design and innovation, see Flightmaster and Ploprof. A the same time Omega also serves the historic/heritage market segment, see Moonwatch.

This thread could get interesting...

Rolex and Omega are different companies with different philosophies.

They are obviously doing well in their niche.

On the point that Omega has "too many" watches:
Omega does not actually offer *that* many watches. If a watch is offered on a leather strap or a bracelet, there are two SKUs instead of one. Model on a rubber strap? Another SKU. Dial variation? Another SKU. Rolex, on the other hand, basically uses the same reference number as long as the case and the metal material is the same. And they don't offer watches on leather straps.

::facepalm1:: My one advice to Omega would be avoid following any social media advice.

People cry all day long about the number of LEs, well they sell, and sell well. Omega tons of variety, some I like, some I don't, why would anyone cry about having choice?

Internets full of people who want their watch to go up in price (and always get the terms "price" and "value" confused). Watch price bubbles (or any assets bubble) isn't a good thing if you took the time to step backwards and take a proper look at such situations.

Good video / I like his presentation. You need to watch the whole thing to get his full picture. Really kicks in at the 8min mark for me. Some mixed messages but I agree regarding product families and I touched on the Aqua Terra as a separate line in this thread:-

https://omegaforums.net/threads/modern-omega-branding-watch-family-lines-time-to-change.92965/

I think you can have radical technical innovation but I agree better in conjunction with slower evolution in terms of the overall aesthetics. Having said that I do think the DSOTM is the best example I have ever seen of maintaining a history yet radically modernising a product - hard to top that as an object lesson which set a new standard. Having star designers is also cool.... but might encourage even more limited / special editions and lets face it Omega don't need too much more encouragement in that area :0)

Advice from a guy with sunglasses on upside down on his head indoors. 🙄

Both middle tier brands with one spending a lot more on marketing. The consumer pays for this marketing. 😗

We have had hundreds of the Omega v Rolex threads over the years.

Both good quality watches just a matter of consumer choice and most here own both......

Aesthetics and branding do matter - otherwise we would all buy the best no label stuff. I did not see this as Rolex versus Omega but I am interested how Omega will take things forward from here. I see positive steps but also some quick buck moves.... and it does not take long to destroy a brand with modern social media (having said that the vintage will hold up I am sure :0) - I still think he makes some interesting if well worn points.

I think its clear hes not taking a stance around quality, purely around business and brand strength. That gap is objectively pretty big today between the two. The core of his message is that Omega has all the pieces needed to execute a brand as strong or even strong than Rolex. He is clearly a huge fan of Omega.

Exactly. I feel that a post of a picture of an angry squirrel would be appropriate about now.

Have one on me :0)

I actually watch the whole video....
Although, despite the silly sunglasses, it started off well, I found it somehow “childish” in several aspects. For example: how can you claim that OB should not have models that Asians prefer/like in Europe when there are actually some many Asian tourists and they clearly prefer buying in Europe because its is cheaper because of taxes?
Cheers
