How often do you see ANY nice watch in the wild?

I live in Baltimore and usually the only people I see wearing nice watches are older guys (50+) around the inner harbor. Most young people wear an apple watch or a fashion watch. Seems like the idea of wearing a mechanical watch is foreign to most people.

Hello, fellow Baltimorean! I can relate. I work in a nonprofit setting and I almost never see a real watch on anyone, except for 2 younger colleagues that I gifted some entry-level watches to.

I'm in Palm Springs at the moment and I swear 10% of the population have a 5-digit sub.

So in Palm Springs 5 digit subs are almost as common as arseholes…….everyone has one!

Yesterday in Baden-Baden (Germany) on the street, I wanted to see the time pulling my wrist off the jacket, a guy in front of me did the same in the same moment - he had a green-glass Rolex Milgauss. But still this is very rare to see someone wearing a watch (and if yes - something different than smartwatch). In the office where I work (out of, say, 120 people), there are 4 Omega (Railmaster, SMP300, De Ville Chrono, SM quartz) and 2 Rolex (Explorer, Daytona) wearer, none of them is really a watch enthusiast.

I saw two young guys 16 or 17 years old, one was wearing a Tissot PRX quartz and the other a Seiko 5 automatic.

Went to pick up my knife that needed an edge and finally ran into the owner, Eytan. There's a large Omega Speedmaster digital clock above the counter and the sales staff told me the owner is a watch guy.

Today Eytan was wearing a titanium 39mm Pelagos. Like a true watch guy, he took it off and handed it to me when I asked about it. I had introduced myself and told him I was wearing my Speedmaster since I was going to his shop. He has several, and his first was a Mark II Racing from his dad.

Eytan says he is sticking to dive watches and 39mm from now on. He likes the practicality and comfort, especially the lightness and micro adjusting bracelet. Makes sense. His watch bore the signs of not being babied. The 39mm felt really nice on my 7.25 inch wrist.

I tried to impress him with my SW A-11 but after about 10 Speedmasters, he wasn't having it.

Fun meeting another watch guy. He had just come back from a blade convention in Ft Worth, which he said could have been a watch convention instead of a knife convention.

Here's a Pic from his web site. Notice the speedy:

Oh yeah, the Blade Show is insane. Pretty fun to attend, if you can.

I design bathrooms in an oil rich area, consequently I've seen lots of clients wearing Rolex (DD, DateJust, Sub, YM), at least one Patek and the most recent sighting was a chap wearing an IWC on one wrist and a smart watch on the other. I've done a lot of work for a retired submarine captain who wears... a Submariner, his wife has a datejust with a diamond bezel.

One other designer has a PO chrono (and a handfull of Christofer Wards) and plans to buy a Speedmaster for his 50th birthday. Another has a Tudor North flag, and old G-shock and a Dirty Dozen style Baltany.

There's a Indian restuarant local to work and the owner wears a yellow gold yacht master.

Of the reps who come into us;
Two have older Tags
One has a PO
One has several IWCs
One has a Sub

One company in this industry gives out Rolexes for 10 years service (with the company logo engraved on the caseback). I've seen one in person and it didn't look fake but their entire business model consists of ripping off other people's designs and having them manufactured cheaply in the far east so.... 🤔

Got a good look at an older gentlemen's Rolex Polar Explorer II at the 1st grade chorus concert tonight. Good looking watch.

I work in the legal field and don’t see as much as one might think. On the other hand, I did support a project with Ed Sheeran recently… and well… he, and everyone on his team had something nice on the wrist. Fun to talk watches with someone passionate, but at same time grounded.

Only when I go to Cars & Coffee/Fuelfed do I ever see anything notable.

I see at least one cool watch at every graduation ceremony I attend. I'm a college professor, so I go to two of them every year. Most are Datejusts, but I often see Seamasters, Subs, and the occasional JLC Reverso or Master Ultra Thin.

Mostly on graduates, or faculty, or both?

Doing a garage sale today to sell some junk and a gentleman wearing a GMT Master II (LN) bought some old sci-fi books from me. 👍

Spotted a woman wearing a two-tone rose gold DateJust earlier. That’s two Rollies in one week. Maybe I just don’t get out enough.

I saw a cool Citizen diver on a rubber strap in the pub last night. Sorry no picture.

I had a student who's father bought her a rose gold datejust for her birthday. She was very excited to show it off, so I showed off my Eterna automatic.
