How often do you see ANY nice watch in the wild?

Last summer in Venice, during the Film Festival, I spotted an Omega Seamaster chronograph 145.something on the wrist of a guy on a steamboat. That was my first serious non-Rolex vintage sighting ever.

Definitely less than I would like. Always brings a smile to my face seeing a fellow watch guy/girl wearing something other than Apple Watch or a fashion watch.
+1. It's getting easier to spot vintage and modern luxury watches as so many people are now wearing smart watches. That being said, I'm always pleased to see younger folks wearing luxury mechanical watches -- of those, it's almost always Submariners, Datejusts, Speedmasters and Seamasters, but occasionally I spot something from the big three or from JLC at the top end or something from Hamilton or Tissot at the entry level.

Very seldom do I see any really nice watch, I don't even see that many Rolexes anymore. And in 40+ years of collecting I've had very few acknowledgements of any watch I was wearing. I had a guy in Whitefish, Montana comment on my Daytona, but that was in 2020. But last Friday my wife and I went into San Antonio for the day, and I had my New 321 Ed White on. I was in Spec's liquor looking at cognacs and the salesguy saw it and said "nice Speedmaster", and two hours later we were having dinner at Perry's steakhouse at La Cantera and as our waiter put down my Caesar salad he said, " I salute your choice of watch, my friend". Both of these guys were about 35, so there is some interest in nice watches in this age cohort. But as we know Apple watches are everywhere now.

And every generation of them will be in landfills in 5 years or less. I'll stick with Swiss luxury mechanicals, obsolete though they may be.

More likley to wind up in the eWaste bin. Or in the drawer with all those old keys to cars long gone to the scrap yard.

The main downside is the mfg can shut them off at any time via a software update. It does seem strange when something made 6 or so years back is older than the stuff I normally collect. They really are the dark side. Quicker, more seductive. And given how many on the secondary market. With craked screens. prone to anger.

Now swatches on the other hand ...

(Really are unrepairable.)

Funny you should mention this, the $17,000 all gold Apple watch is now completely obsolete. And I'm willing to bet it doesn't even make a good paperweight.

People who can afford the $17K Apple Watch do not care if it is obsolete.
It did its job for bragging rights.

I totally agree, but the same is true of people who buy luxury Swiss watches made out of steel for 10K. To @gbesq point, these watches are already obsolete.

Speaking of...

Two weeks ago I was traveling and while at various airports, I had seen three random travelers wearing the new Swatch x Blancpain. It was easy to spot them as they are so bright. I'm not one to spark up conversations (or try to take sneak photos of strangers), so I have no idea if these people are following the hype train or are actually into watches... it was just fun to see such bold/fun choices out in the wild. Though, still rather disappointing knowing these were all eventually destined for a landfill.

Beyond that, at the airports or on the flights, I had seen the plethora of dated Datejust's, the ubiquitous Sub or GMT, high number of Apple watches, or the many naked wrists. Typically I don't see Omega's but on this occasion I saw two. First was the blue ceramic SMP300 and later on I saw the blue bezel/white dial SMP300 on a blue rubber strap. It was the first time I had seen either reference in person and I really liked them... a lot.

This is what I was wearing 😎 It's usually the only "nice" watch I see out in the wild.

Saw a gentleman wearing a Seamaster GMT 2534.50 at lunch today. We were both leaving at the same time, so I struck up a conversation. The watch had been his daily for 20 years and the bezel had a lovely fade. He said he’s never had it serviced though, and that it’s still running around -1 min / month. I wonder if he’s got any worn pivots in that movement 😵‍💫

This is something that happened a little while ago but I forgot to post to this thread. I was walking home from work a couple months ago. this was in a downtown area of a major US city, and I saw a middle-aged man walk past me on the sidewalk. I happened to catch what was on his wrist and it was.....a Patek 5370. The black enamel dial version. It was absolutely wild and I was so amazed to see a watch of that caliber just out and about in the wild like that.

Met Nick during breakfast in Vegas. He and his wife came from Singapore to watch Formula 1. His wife purchased the 3861 for him but had to buy it in Spain. They said it's hard to get in Singapore.

He asked for a picture, which was nice as I approached him first after spotting his Speedy. (My wife is still slightly annoyed by watch nerds but she still took a picture, but only after Nick's wife took one.)

Also met a TSA agent on the way home. He was wearing a MoonSwatch. I commented on his watch and showed him mine, which led to lots of questions. He said he also had a 3861.

Nice to see young people wearing Speedmasters.

I live in Orange County and barely see any good watches, people here tend to wear Apple Watch, but I don’t consider it a watch, more like gadget.

In my line of work I meet many lawyers, having met well over 500 over the last decade. The most popular watch of choice is the Speedmaster. I have seen a couple of Navitimers and various other Breitling, a few Rolex with a focus on day dates, one Cartier tank, and one aqua terra. I am sure others have slipped by me, but I have noticed speedy’s on many occasion, usually on steel bracelet or leather strap.

I see nice watches quite often in NYC and in transit through work travel. But conversations are more rare, outside the occasional conversation with a co-worker. However, recent exchanges:

Security bag check attendant spotted my Peter Blake and showed me his Tag while entering a London museum.

Bartender at the airport correctly identified my 1957 Seamaster reissue, and was a vintage collector.

I have had very very few watch interactions besides seeing endless Rolexes and more Rolexes when traveling.

The first was at a gun show when I saw this guy with a stand of watches (new and old Rolexes, vintage omega, vintage bulova, etc.). He was wearing a Batman and I commented on it and we talked about watches for a while. He is now my go-to watch smith.

At my new work one of the ladies I worked with said "I noticed you are always wearing a different old-looking watch. My husband really likes watch's and you guys should chat it up at the company party". I happened to met him at a company softball game and he was wearing a cool vintage Caravelle. The next time I met him at the party he was wearing a 70's white dial stainless datejust.

I was wearing a old green military Timex the first time and then this the second time:

On remembrance Sunday I was talking to a bloke in a pub who had a Tudor GMT, his wife had a Longines Conquest.
I had a Bremont Alt1-p2 Lancaster on and my wife had her Bremont Solo LC.
It's seldom that I get talking to another person who's interested in watches but to get both couples is a one off.
We had a good chat about our collection which is always a pleasure 👍

Met a client yesterday who was wearing a black Sub date. He got it 5 years ago and waited 2 years for it. He clearly likes Rolex as he's been waiting 5 years for a Daytona Panda and he also wants to get a GMT Sprite. Had a good chat with him about the state of the collection.

I took my cat back to the vet today to have her staples removed, and the veterinarian that performed the procedure was wearing a two-tone Rolex datejust, dial down. It was very well worn and had a rich patina of scratches. It definitely belonged on that wrist and probably had been there for a long time.

Still waiting to see an Omega in the wild.
