How often do you see ANY nice watch in the wild?

When our little one was really little, him propped up and strapped into the shopping cart's child seat thing. Us, groggy AF and riding bad-mood hair triggers even on our best days. Cart full of groceries. We were closing the last 3 feet of space for the check-out when a very elderly man ninja'd himself in front of us in a way I still can't recall or even begin to reconstruct. In his defense, he had like 4 things in his little hand basket.

On his wrist: a super loosey-goosey TT DJ, looking to be at least 40 years old and frankly looking great. The perfect watch for this age, IMO.

She: [to me in an uncharacteristic muffled tone] Are you actually kidding me with this?

Me: [tongue click] Rolex.
LOL great story!

I think I must just hang out in the wrong places.

Granted, my post-retirement job is driving a dump truck, so I never see a nice watch being worn anywhere I go except what is on my own wrist.

Last night my amazingly beautiful wife and I attended her HS reunion. It was at a nice place in Monterey and there were a few hundred people there. Many financially successful folks among them. As is my usual habit, I looked harder at wrists than at name tags. The nicest watches I saw were aluminum Apples.

In the past year I spied one Sub on a friend's wrist at a barbecue at my brother in laws house. That's my sum total of finds in the wild.

Am I just a low-class rube who hangs out with the wrong crowd, or has the world really gone 99.9% G-Shock and Apple?
This watch is the daily watch of one of the chaps I met in my job as a guide. He worked until recently as a fish merchant and then sold his business. He told me he also owns a Cartier.

Last night I went to a rooftop bar in Manhattan. I was there for about two hours and able to snap only a fraction of the wrist candy present before it got dark. About 95% were Rolexes (two of them vintage), but also captured Speedies, a Grand Seiko, etc. I saw at least one AP RO and two Panerai and several I couldn't id at a glance. This is a very typical representation: it's rare to see anything too exotic or unusual but very, very common to see the popular mid-level stuff.

A rolex president full gold (possibly women's model - but looks pretty chunky). Must be a 30k watch?

I also see quite a few Speedies in the wild. And the odd Presidential. And I should add that my previous comment about Rolex was meant in good humor. This is the daily wearer of a friend of mine (pictured on my wrist). It’s most certainly real and it’s owner is a genuine mensch.

I hope I've found the right thread for this. A watch enthusiast in a place I would NOT have expected noticed the stainless steel Connie I was wearing today and we talked about mine and his (not on his wrist at that moment) Seamaster. He broke all my stereotypes about who loves vintage mechanical watches: a big, 6'+ black guy working as a greeter and security at Target. He was wondering where he could get it serviced and if Shane & Co. was really the best place. (No, probably not.)

That’s a pristine shark nose if I’m not mistaken. Your friend has good taste.

Ha! The car is mine but it’s not a shark nose. E30 that I’ve had for years.

Saw an IWC Aquatimer for the first time at a gun range of all places, while we were visiting a friend in Dallas last week. Didn't look too bad

I hope it didn't end up being target practice 😁

Nah it was too nice. Now if it had been a Panerai, though...

A woman in the coffee shop was wearing the stainless steel one of these. A present from her watch dealer boss.

I was impressed by the watch and with the boss

I work for the city down here and only the upper management has nice pieces.
There are a couple ladies DJ's here and there and a woman in my department has a Michelle.
I'm the only lowly employee that has anything other than apple watches.
Government work doesn't pay enough for most to own anything decent. Just the upper crust...

On normal day 2 or 3, and that’s the same 2 or 3 in my office I see everyday. Some weekends might see 20.

I live in Hong Kong and so it's pretty common to see people wearing Rolexes on the subways and buses, and Pateks, APs and the like in the business district. Most recent example of a nice watch spotted in the wild was the two-tone Rolex Yacht-Master II worn by a young saleswoman selling jewellery at a gem and jewellery trade show my wife and I visited the other day. I have to say, she wore it well.

Not technically "the wild" but I was able to handle the new Reverso Minute Repeater at the Jaeger-LeCoultre "Sound Maker" event in New York last night 😎 It's absolutely amazing - I have a short vid of the minute repeater in action on my IG story

Went to an open day at the local Porsche dealer, lots of garish chunks of metal. I did however spot a youngish guy wearing a Heuer Siffert. Apparently it was his fathers. Lovely watch.
