How much did CrowdStrike ruin your day?

Only an issue with Microsoft.
Mac and Linux had no issues...

Except for those people who had flights or medical procedures whose services use Microsoft products to for their essential operations.

I didn't even notice until I saw it on the news this afternoon. I don't use Crowdstrike, and maybe this is why. Both my Windows and Linux machines are working. All the website I visited today are working with usual response time.

Typical Friday. Kicked off early for yardwork and car detailing. Hopefully, Lewis and George can qualify.

Luckily for us, we just have our 2 main servers that got stuck in the boot loop.
it is just a process of booting in safe mode, finding a particular file and deleting it.
Can’t imagine the process for people that have 100’s of systems to manage all over the place.

Yep so for us we are right on the threshold where we think the known manual safe mode fix is the way forward for our servers, just due to topology reasons. But for the workstations, there are thousands affected so I believe our end user compute teams are setting up an automated PXE boot image that will perform the fix for those. But they still need to co-ordinate a TON of staff to come on site and plug in for that to occur.

I expect my team can probably have our Windows based servers remediated prior to Monday morning, we're just pulling a bunch of overtime to smash through them like you but on a scale of hundreds. I'm on lunch break now actually 😜

Current mood:

So the issue is an issue with bit locker and crowd strike.

so looks like the QA team wasn’t running bitlocker on test systems as they are non prod.

sigh.

Servers/systems without Bitlocker are still affected. Presence of Bitlocker just alters the remediation steps.

That was a Mickey mouse event . That amplified by 1000 will be in case of a military conflict. So, keep cash and buy from small owner operated shops or the Farm gate. The Big Boys will not function ... A Landline and mail delivery Pigeons will come back into favour. The last 3 Generations will perish . What a thought ...

The reporting on this issue is really winding me up. The culprit is Crowdstrike and them alone. It impacts computers with a Microsoft operating system that happen to have Cloudstrike installed. But from the reporting the public at large would think it was a problem caused by Microsoft. Details matter journalists!

That's not to say Microsoft are perfect, they definitely are not, but in this instance it really is nothing to do with them. And yet, in my chosen news app this morning, the story is still referred to as "the Microsoft IT outage".

Everyone knows the Aliens did this. Always before They attack. But by 5pm I figure we were ok so I went to happy hour

No affect. My two home computers and work computer - all Windows machines - were completely unaffected and CrowdStrike isn't familiar to me. None of the sites or programs I needed were affected either. A quiet and boring day, actually. Sorry to say it wasn't so for many of you.

We use SaaS for our accounting, and their service was down most of the day Friday. Zero impacts on our Windows server and workstations.

Sounds like they managed to brick around 8.5 million devices globally. That's quite an accomplishment.

Although Microsoft wasn't specifically at fault here, I do wonder why so many of these systems are even running Windows to begin with. 👎
A local supermarket chain had some of their automatic doors not functioning. I hope this will cause some people in charge to re-think their choices in software for infrastructure.

Shallow corporate virtue-signalling, I'd assume. Their inclusivity officer needs to look busy. 😁

There are only so many hours in the day for the suits to manage a company, and if too much time is fretting about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) it takes their eyes off of the critical functions that they are responsible for. Agree with it or not but it's a valid point.

8.5 million!? That's including users as well right?
Someone's fingers are gonna be sore booting all those into safe mode.

I just have this feeling that.... A company can have their marketing team post about inclusivity without taking time away from development teams working on core products. Is that so crazy to think?

Someone messed up here, but it feels like "too much time spent on DEI" is just an odd response to me.

Did Crowdstike's competition also cause massive glitches after making Instagram posts in support of Pride?

Another supermarket here seemed to be fixing automated point of sale terminals one by one. Signs up saying "Sorry, limited self checkout available". Crazy.

To be fair, I'm not sure why a cybersecurity company should have anyone focused on DEI topics to begin with.
Focus on your business and hire the best people for the job, since millions of people are depending on you. Most good IT companies already do this and don't need to make vapid social media posts about it.
