How Many Here Do Not Like the Speedmaster? Why?

Although I own several vintage Speedmasters, they don't really do it for me... I'm not sure exactly why.

I like the watch, what I don’t really like is when someone says to me “Oh you know the speedmaster has a such great story, it went to the moon” and things like that.

In my case, I never really considered a Speedy Professional in all my years of collecting, wearing and flipping! That was until I tried a friend’s on. Once I tried it on, it took me only a couple of weeks to get one on my wrist. As great looking as they are in pictures, they are so much better on the wrist.
As far as the other versions, they don’t interest me.

Knowing what not to like about a Speedmaster could potentially help me in my healing process. Please, folks, keep’em coming.

I don't like the ones that have the printed logos (or stamped, however the process is)

Quite envy the rare ones with the vintage style metal logos on the dial

Well, I’ve read all the previous posts and am now on page 2 of this thread without having seen an answer that sets out my ‘disinterest' in Speedmasters.

I’ve never worn, or owned a Speedy, nor wanted to. They look too big, too clunky, too heavy on the wrist and much too confusing for my taste.

I’ve never really noticed, or bothered to work out, the difference between the various models.

I’m not a fan of sub dials - never worked out what they’re for or what they do apart from making it difficult to see where the hour and minute hands are to tell me the time.

I don’t care for bezels with numbers - I’ve no use for them - and goodness knows why I’d want a tachometer bezel (?) on my watch.

I’ve no use for 'pushers' or stop-watch options.

If I click on an OF thread about Speedys, or is it Speedies, I fast forward.

You’re all welcome to them, but my heart races for sixties Seamasters, Geneves and Longines, without sub dials and, if I have to have one, a date window, but definitely not a day window!

I do like a sweep second hand, but only to reassure me that the watch is working and that time really is passing - particularly if I’m in a boring meeting when it feels as though time has stood still!

This is an easy one:

- I "hate" the Speedy because on some of the modern bracelets, I can not get a perfect fit since no half link is available or no micro adjustment on the clasp
- I "hate" the Speedy because there is no date when I "need" it
- I "hate" the Speedy because the prices have Skyrocketed and I can no longer pick one at $3,000 all day and night
- I "hate" the Speedy because I missed my shot at acquiring the Silver Snoopy at a regular price
- I "hate" the Speedy because each time a new LE comes out, I feel compelled to add it to the collection
- I "hate" the Speedy because Neil DeGrasse Tyson said so (not!)
- I "hate" the Speedy because reading the elapsed time on the hour sub-counter at 6:00pm is tricky around the hour if you are not versed with the fact that the hand should be just PAST the hour marker to indicate that a full 60min have gone by
- I "hate" the Speedy because I am still waiting for my new Ed White... and because the #SpeedyTuesday #3 is not yet out!

SO MANY REASONS to "hate" the Speedy Pro Moonwatch, isn't there?!? 😁

Here is my share of love, hum, I meant "hate" for the Speedy:

No hate here, only love. 🥰 There will always be at least one in my watchbox. Which one is the question. I am not a monogamous watch enthusiast.

I don't feel a strong need to own a Speedmaster, though I do quite like them, especially the "Tintin" dial. I just don't like the price.

I arrived on the forum as a Seamaster fan, but with no real love for the Speedmaster, which although I appreciated it's history, I found quite a boring watch to be honest. But - you spend enough time here - and you will get hooked! Just picked up my first, the fois, and I couldn't be more pleased with it so far!

Haters be haters....

People that hate tool watches that are easy to read, well proportioned, and look good on any strap...
It is not a question of hate, some watches you like, some not, some you just don't care for.

As a lover of chronographs, I understand the perfect readability of the Speedmaster due to its clear design and also its size.
I own a 105.012 and once I also owned a modern Speedy 38725001. They look good on so many straps.

Having said that and to answer @Marsimaxam 's question: I am quite indifferent when it comes to Speedmasters. If I compare modern to vintage, I certainly prefer vintage with the AML and the nicer chrono hand. But the watch doesn't give me the thrill other watches do, because - I know it is blasphemy - the watch is a bit boring to me. Most of the time when I choose the watch of the day, another watch is preferred, so I hardly wear it and always think of selling it.

And another reason is the size of >40mm which doesn't do it for me.

I hate to admit on this thread that I own two speedmasters-a pro and a reduced, especially after I have mocked enthusiasts of being "speedy dweebs". However that mocking nickname does have merit.

If Dennis aka “The Squirrel” was still amongst us, this thread would be off the rails by now.

I have always loved the idea of the Speedmaster Pro, but never could get past the stark white stick hands. I know they make it more legible, but I just do not like them. I also never liked the modern bracelets.

That’s why I finally got the FOIS edition - love the polished alpha hands and it came on a strap, which I prefer.

For quite a few years I had no interest in Speedmasters. I thought they were a bit boring and a bit pedestrian. I was in an airport one day and had a decent wait until my flight. I spent quite a bit of time looking a speedmaster and it hit me how well designed and proportioned it was. After that I wanted one. I am not a fanatic but I now have three of them, the ST1 and 2 and a 1989 20th Apolo anniversary edition. I like the design of all three but the 20th anniversary edition is probably the last one I would part with. As others have said buy what you like and ignore anyone else's opinion.

Similar story to myself, I had bought a 1970s Constellation because I loved the look of a pie pan and it was a birth year piece. I joined as I was looking towards vintage Connie's and Seamaster's, I didn't even know about the Speedmaster!

I then read more on Omega, it's various connections and in the Speedmaster's role in the space race. All of a sudden the next piece I purchased was the A11 50th and now I'm waiting on the Snoopy 50th...

For me, a trio, including the new standard 3861 Moonwatch at somepoint in the future should satisfy the itch as the rabbit hole is simply too expensive to continue to go down... (famous last words)

I thought they were 38mm?
Only the early and the automatic references but not the Speedmaster Professionals which are 42mm.

I didn't own a Speedmaster until 10 years ago, and they never appealed that much to me in photos. I thought they were a bit mundane looking and probably too large for my smallish wrist. I actually bought a Reduced first, and hated it. Sold it on immediately, and decided Speedmasters were not for me.

But over time I saw how many people sincerely loved their Speedmaster Pros, and noticed that they disparaged the Reduced ,so I started to wonder if maybe I had bought the wrong watch. Eventually I decided to bite the bullet and buy a 3570.50, figuring I could sell it on for a small loss if I didn't like it. I found that I really liked wearing it, but being more of a vintage watch guy, I didn't reach for it very often, and so I sold it on. After all that, I was finally motivated to educate myself enough to buy a vintage Speedy Pro, and now they are firmly entrenched in my collection. I wouldn't say that they are among my absolute favorites, but if I were forced to scale back to a dozen pieces, I would probably keep one.

The speedy is the watch that always seems to elude me. eBay BINs that I hesitate on and miss, eBay BINs that I win then the seller cancels, and local sales where a price is agreed then the seller backs out in the final hours. If I ever get one I have high hopes that I’ll love it.
