How Many Here Do Not Like the Speedmaster? Why?

I saw a post on another watch forum about why the Speedmaster does nothing for some. I wanted to ask an Omega Watch Forum if there are any here that do not care for the Speedmaster, any and all versions, and if so why?

Price can not be the issue as I know some vintage Speedmasters and special editions cost well into 5 figures, but rather the look, style and design.

All opinions and thoughts welcomed.

By the way, I'm an ardent admirer of the Speedmaster and enjoy mine. The patina, the history, the subtle differences, the manufacturer, the bezel, the step dial, the tear drop chronograph hand... some of the reasons

Haters be haters....

People that hate tool watches that are easy to read, well proportioned, and look good on any strap... People may not want to own one, but you cannot deny it's one of the holy trinity of tool watches. I can see some people hate all the discussions about them though.... Then again those people also tend to give a pass on Rolex forums to the insane number of Sub posts.

50th and new Snoopy don’t do anything for me and the new one is Meh same same but different.
So my like has run out with the beginning of the 3861 🥱

Have 3 and a half so I like them.

Half - as basically it is movement, pushers and hands of a Speedmaster

They're definitely in a class of watches that I would enjoy having around to play with for a week or 2 but hand back to the owner without a twinge of regret. Just not my style of watch that I enjoy wearing. Most watches above 36mm fall into this category. At some point in the far future I'll get my dad's 145.022-69 and his Mark II, but those will be kept for sentimental reasons rather than any attachment to the watch itself.

I bought a Speedmaster in 2000 and thought it was terrific for a lot of years but just grew disenchanted with it. My other choice at the time was the sword-hand Seamaster models and I thought the Speedmaster was the better choice but as time went on and I rarely used the chronograph and paid extra for servicing because it is a chronograph, I basically had enough. I traded it to my watchmaker, got a 2254.50.00 Seamaster to replace it, and never looked back. For some supid reason I thought I just had to have a chronograph again and bought one, and I've regretted it ever since.

So, while I can't say that I hate the Speedmaster, per se, I don't share in the enthusiasm for them that many others seem to have.

I fall into what seems to be the uncommon category of people who like the Speedy in its various iterations, and am hoping to snag a Pro this year, but it isn't by any means my favorite watch or favorite Omega (for me that will always be my first SMP 2551.80 from days of yore).

It IS robust, reliable, well designed and executed, but that doesn't mean anyone has to love it - the joy of this hobby sometimes is simply in seeing other folks' tastes. 😀

I have owned two Speedy Pros, a modern and a vintage. Both were excellent watches and I have no regrets. Over time, however, I found my SMPc (photo below) to be a better value proposition for the money and I now prefer a dress diver to a chronograph as my daily wearer. That being said, it’s hard to hate what is one of the most iconic watches ever made.

Were I forced to have “The Two Watch Collection,” no Speedmaster would make the cut.

But were I allowed a six watch collection, some “special” version would probably make the cut (a fair-lane model would not).

That said, any mortal-man Daytona wouldn’t make even a 12 watch collection cut.... maybe not a 24, either.

I certainly don’t hate them, large sport watches are just not my style. This happens to work out well for me quite well because the watches I love aren’t crazy expensive 😀
I’m the type of guy who prefers a 16234 Datejust over a 1675 GMT for example 👍

Just personal taste for some people. Buy what you like, and if others don’t agree, who cares...

I’m with you for some reason the 3861 falls flat to me. Maybe it no longer has the romance of a golden age movement of one type or another. The 861 is a workhorse that was produced for over 50 years. Solid and dependable. The 3861 is like bringing the watch into the future something that didn’t need to be done.

I don’t think most people on this forum think it is their favorite Omega.

I do think it’s a watch that every watch collector should own at some point.

I generally don’t like chronographs: the dials are very busy and the crown is tough to wind in between the push buttons. Nonetheless I do own one chrono: speedmaster FOIS. I enjoy wearing it on occasion but never use its functionality. I may trade it someday for a speedy pro, just because I want one in my collection, but I prefer my seamasters and GMT.

Kind of a funny thread in an Omega forum. Still, there will be those who do not like the Speedmaster; so be it. It is an another interesting thing to ask: if you don't like the Speedmaster, what do you like? I can understand the Navitimer and El Primero fans. I have a hard time with many of the Daytona fans.

The timing of this thread is funny as I was just commenting to another member via PM that I should start a thread on long time Speedy owners who hate their Speedy’s.
I have owned my ‘72 since ‘02, wore it daily in bi-monthly rotation with my GMT for 15 years and never gave it another thought. When I started rebuilding my collection, I found so many other watches I enjoyed wearing far more.
I find the Speedy awkward on my wrist, it has long flat lugs that sit off my wrist and don’t contour over it and rub the bone at back of my wrist (7-1/4” wrist so not small). The overhanging bezel and pushers make the crown fussy to access, and as I have gotten older I find the dial difficult to read- all the shapes are similar (stick hands, stick indices, sticks-sticks-sticks) so it looks like a herd of zebras when I’m trying to read the time on the fly.
I have had it so long and it has been such a part of me for so long that I don’t ever intend to sell it, but it gets little wrist time these days...I just have so many other more exciting options.
So yes, I hate my Speedmaster, but considering I have owned it for so long, I don’t feel like I could be considered a “hater” in the current sour grapes definition of the word. Rather, I am someone who has figured out exactly how I like a watch to fit and have grown fussier with age about what bothers me and what doesn’t.

I do have several Speedmasters, the Pros and the Marks.

But my daily is almost always a Seamaster (titanium SM pro, Watchco SM300 or Aqua Terra ).

So Speedmaster and Constellations for eye candies, Seamaster for comfort.

No hate or dislike, just pragmatic choice.

I love the speedmaster but sometimes I 'hate' the speedmaster (money driven) market. I often get the feeling it's not about the love for watches anymore but more about investment value, status, how much is it worth. And often money does'nt bring the best out of people. So it's a market I find a bit decadent from time to time.

Same can be said about sport Rolex- those of us who have owned some of these watches since they were “cheap” often gag when we see the current market...you have GOT to be shitting me!
But I have found that on this forum, the love for the Speedy is predominantly the love for the “geek” factor of the watch (which I can appreciate and why I bought mine) and not as much for status - it’s a cool piece of history and a classic.

Interesting candid response.

As I was reading your post I thought of my hammer. It's bulky, heavy, a little more awkward than the rest of my tools. But every toolbox has to have a hammer. You can't get it done without a hammer.

That's your speedy. You got to have one.

There are more elegant watches, other interesting watches. But they aren't hammers.

But this thread is about people who do not like the speedy. That's not me. But one thing I am dealing with is how many does a person need? I get the desire for limiteds and each vintage model. That's part of collecting, right? But if you got one, that's all you really need. That might be some of the hating. All the speedy lovers wanting more and more and seemingly having no love left over for orher watches. But I don't think speedy lovers don't appreciate the wider universe. They just dig the speedy.
