How good and rare are these speedmaster professionals?

My 2002 watch has a serial on the lug...
I have not looked at the photo, but some sellers (even trusted sellers) may photoshop out the serial number. Instead of using some black blotch to make it obvious that the serial number is being hidden, they may try to make it look like the serial number was never there. (This is a pet peeve of mine.) You can generally see traces of the photoshopping if you look closely. Could that be a possibility here?

(The Moonwatch Only book says that serial numbers on cases started in 1990.)

Edit: just took a look at the listing. Yeah, that caseback is enough to make me scream, "run!". As Tubber said, there are no solid casebacks with the "and only" inscription. That's only on newer display casebacks. The tail on the "Q" in "Qualified" is also wrong (oddly angled); tails are horizontal, stubby, or crossing (cuts through the oval). The font is also too small (the top "Flight Qualified" sentence should make at least a half-circle).

Example 1 limited edition of 9999.

Whoa Nelly! Only 9,999 of them? Combined with the other bazillion Speedy models, there might only be enough Speedmasters that 1 in every 8 people on the planet could have one! Now that's rare!

Example 1 did sell. I believe at $2550 USD. The serial number of the caseback did match the movement from the photos.

Good point - if there are so many I would expect regular used Speedys (not reduced) to start at $1,500 USD. What is driving the price of "modern" 10-15 year old examples? Are there many buyers and not enough used sellers?

My Reference:
http://www.lunaroyster.com/watches/bnib-omega-speedmaster-legendary-moonwatch-31130423001005 Is a brand new example priced $3875 of a 311.30.42.30.01.005 . Retail says $5,200.
The case candy seems way better for the newer example than http://www.fratellowatches.com/speedy-tuesday-omega-speedmaster-professional-apollo-xi-30th-anniversary-limited-edition-from-1999/

Don't know, but the prices for used speedy pros are pretty high, relative to the cost of a new (modern) one. Once you take servicing into account, a used watch can be relatively near the cost of a new/modern one. If you're looking for a 3570.50 or newer, it often makes sense to buy new instead of used.

(Chitownwatch has the .005 for US$3500.)

Edit: also, I think a couple of celebrities have been seen wearing speedies. If so, the fan herds might be helping to drive the prices up.

Contacted the seller, they've added more pictures... this think is a full on franken.

30million serial on the movement, service dial and hands, service caseback from the 50th LE.

Steer clear.

Interesting article on pricing and Japanese customer demand. The map is clickable to view sales from eBay.

Looks like watch price inflation on these about $500+ since last year.

With the Global crisis in 2007, look at the US sales for BMW X3 comparing 2004 (34K units sold) vs 2009 (6K units sold) --> which makes the 2009 X3 a "rare" vehicle.

Did anyone notice price anomalies for Omega watch resale values for 2009 models? I believe I saw an old thread in 2008 for Speedys pricing range $1,500.

Any comments on the above watch please?

I am looking to learn more about the watch face and hands. It appears the serial number of the case does match the movement.

Looks pretty good.

Take into account that by the time you've serviced it, you're close to the cost of a new one... and it has no box or papers.

For a watch of this age I'd be looking for a full set around that sort of money.

Looks like 90'e tritium Speedmaster. Need better pics of the watch to make a determination, 2 pics don't cut it. Also, would want to know what parts were changed. Not the best eBay listing I have seen.

Heya

Instead of trawling eBay and posting link after link, why don't you just contact @Kringkily and have him source exactly what you are looking for. While it may not be the cheapest price on earth it will be very competitively priced and there will be no worries or headaches about swapped case backs or missing serial numbers or dodgy dials.

if you go through my posts I repeat this over and over again. I know I sound like a broken record but really this is the single best way for a new Omega buyer to not get screwed. He is the best.

Read the description it might be a 74 and later. The serial number, caseback and what comes with it (replacement parts) will go along way to determining value. If it is an early 80's or earlier with a replacement dial and maybe bezel the value takes a hit. If it stays under 2k I'd be interested as a base for a racing conversion.

As it is price like a 90-98 that needs a service. The pictures suck and make it impossible to tell the age and correctness with the given history.

I thought that dial looked like a much later dial than described.

Very good advice.
Since I am not in a hurry - I am really appreciating everyone who shares their knowledge. It helps me learn a lot about the watch since the Speedmaster has been around for such a long time there is a lot to know.

any vintage speedys especially the premoons and early 70s are no doubt rare pieces to find nowadays. as to how good they are, i think particularly the ones posted on sale, the rule is simple - caveat emptor.

馃榾 happy holidays.

All of this useless stuff, stuck in my head.

I can't learn languages, but fringe watch knowledge and song lyrics from the 80s stick like superglue... ::facepalm1::

We built this city on rock and rohooool...

(Now try to get that out of your head - No need to thank me)

On a different note finish the sentence...."Neon on my naked skin, passing...."

I went for a new one once I realised that a used one was going to cost me almost the same.
