Example 2. I didn't think there was a solid case-back that had "The first and only watch worn on the Moon" on it.

All of this useless stuff, stuck in my head.

I can't learn languages, but fringe watch knowledge and song lyrics from the 80s stick like superglue... ::facepalm1::

I know what you mean. I have been living in a foreign country for the past 20 years and I still struggle with the local lingo. Utterly useless crap gets retained without error and gets recited word for word. Strange ain't it.

Looking at the 2nd watch more closely, it has no serial number, that fake case back... Reported to eBay.

I don't follow modern Speedies very closely but if that is a fake caseback it is pretty good compared with the genuine one in the link you posted. Only thing missing is the serial number, even has the Omega/planet anti-counterfeit symbol thing.

If you look at where the anti counterfeit symbol is on their watch, and where it is on a genuine one.... close but no cigar.

Movement number matches the case number, if that matches the card, and the LE number also matches the cards, then yes...

Aren't Apollo XI LE watches supposed to have engravings on the side of the case?

    Cheers,

I checked the serial number and it matches one for an Apollo XI model, ref. 35605000. Not sure if as Faz mentions these are supposed to have an engraved side, but everything else looks good to me.

    Cheers, Al

For price comparisons, ebay search "Apollo 11 Speedmaster", set the parameters to Worldwide, and you should hit 5 watches.

This is the cheapest, but all the others are on bracelets.

Factor in that you will likely be paying tax/shipping costs on top, and as there's no mention of a service between 1999 and now... well maybe put another $500 aside.

It looks good, and that ebay seller has been recommended a few times on WUS. Some info from the Moonwatch Only book:
    • Quote: "A special caseback is the only feature that distinguishes this series marking the 30th anniversary of the moon landing." There is no mention of any side engraving.
    • It was only on sale from April to December 1999.
    • It appears to have come only with the bracelet.
Edit: also note that, once you factor in a servicing, you're within a few hundred of a new watch. Just be aware of that.

On that second watch I'm guessing the seller was hoodwinked in some way - they have a physical location and sell quite a bit on ebay from the looks of it. What is kind of odd is that it isn't an out and out fake - the subdial spacing is correct on the watch. I wonder if it is just a swapped fake back on a real watch? What year did they first start putting the serial numbers on the lugs? I can't recall. My money is on a watch/watch case that predates that feature, and with a fake back.
