Such a cool thread.

For anyone wondering, it's pronounced "boo-cher-er"

Dealer rep told me it was pronounced "book-er-er". 😵‍💫

Definitely not lol

Buch does mean book. But not pronounced the same.

I am struggling to think how to explain the "ch" bit in writing. It isn't "ck" it's a guttural sound at the back of your throat. Almost an arabic, I need to spit type sound 👎

You know, I asked the Jaeger LeCoultre dealer rep too how to pronounce their name. He laughed and says he doesn't care as long as they buy one.

Now that's honesty.

BTW, the Carl F Bucherer rep was insistent on the pronunciation. He was kind of a dick about it.

Ha that's funny. I mean, I'm assuming this was in America or something - not in Switzerland or Germany!!

Virgin Islands. They have free booze in all the watch shops, sooo we went to all of them.

But still, a dealer rep should be trained how to pronounce their own product. The guy was insistent. Even raised his little pinky when he said it.

I got the same thing. Guess I'll have to see if Jennie Elle say it in her videos. 😁

If you know some Spanish, you can pronounce the Swiss "ch" as if it were a "j" in Spanish.

I showed this one, earlier in this thread. At the time the picture was taken, the watch was as found, and not being worn. I found it to be not very reliable. In my original post, I called the movement a Valjoux. Well, since then, I have serviced the movement, and it now performs very well. During servicing, I found that the movement is actually a Landeron calibre 48. It is a manual winder, 17-jewels, two -registers, and the movement is fitted into what I have heard called a”clamshell” case. The housing for the movement is stainless steel, and that housing is held into the gold filled bezel by 4 grub screws, one behind each lug, as shown. I have seen what is basically the same watch on the message board behind dials with a number of different brand names. Wyler being one. Vintage? Possibly 1960s or early 1970s. It is my only Bucherer, and I quite like it.

Recently acquired from this wonderful forum, and due back from the spa any day. I’ll be wearing this as a dress chronograph in my work rotation:

Nice! I do not see a dibs yet (could be holding telescope to my missing eye) so dibs from here. But my advice is never to part with it.

Picked this up couple of weeks ago at local auction. No-one else was bidding and auctioneer was going to pass and I felt sorry for it at £65 includes commission. Hands are a bit green but runs ok . I'm a sucker for unloved watches

I do not know Spanish, but I know California city names. The j is done with an h sound. Like San Ho-say, or Val-eh-o. So that would make sense as Switzerland is the Confederation Helvetique[SP.] This may also come from some Latinish thing. Caesar, Kaiser and Czar are all the same world (title) with 2000 years difference in regional pronunciation. Ceres is another word what gets a lot of debate how to pronounce. One does not have Ker-i-al for breakfast, although that may be closer to correct pronunciation.

The brits still use d to represent pence. Which actually comes from the word denarius.

I can never remember if I have any Bucherer watches or not. My first reaction was that most watches with this name were cheap pin lever watches. Probably getting the name mixed up with Betlach. I clicked on this thread expecting to see Lapanous or Rego movements. Which is what one would expect to see in a watch with a dial and case similar to watches pictured in this thread.

I wonder if others have made this same mistake?

I think I learned something today.👍
