Maeve has been unsteady on her feet for a while, and we took her to see a neurologist recently, and they confirmed she had something going on in the C5 C6 area. We've been through this before, and in the past one of the area hospitals allowed use of their research MRI on weekends for veterinary purposes. Since covid that has been shut down for some reason, so that's why we were on the road to a clinic 2 hours away. Maeve needed X-rays, MRI, and sampling of spinal fluid. Top panel is without contrast and bottom panel is with contrast injected:
Narrowing in a couple of spots - arrow points to the spinal cord and in this one it's not compressed:
But a little further down it is compressed:
So we went there fully expecting that she would need surgery for a slipped disk, but it's more of a stenosis with only mild impingement. They are treating it with steroids so we were able to bring her home - she was pretty tired after, as were we. Started out on the road at 5:30 am and didn't get home until after 3 pm, so a lot of sitting in the car and at the vets - good thing is they had really nice free coffee.
Here's where they took the CSF from - back of her head:
Raven, one of our other dogs went through this - including the whole surgery, which was done through the front of her neck. It was a brutal process and although she did fully recover, she died of cancer about 8 months later. So I'm very glad that Maeve doesn't have to go through this surgery, at least not now.
We are a little over a week out from this and she has improved on the steroids, so hopefully that is all she will need.
