Mickey, not looking like his namesake this morning.
Mickey Walker, the Toy Bulldog was a wee bit more threatening and won world titles at Welter and Middle as well as fighting the top light heavies and heavies of the day.
Look at those gloves, not quite bare handed but close. Must have broke a lot of hands back then. Modern gloves actually allow boxers to throw harder as they have little fear of breaking hands or fingers. Boxer dogs look like they took a lot of shots to the face
I think it's the wraps that are vital - preventing torsional injuries to the fingers. Not a lot of room under those 4-ounce jobs for that! 😲🤦
Mickey Turpin does look like one of the great old-school coaches though - respect for that.

When I started boxing in 1966 we used horse hair gloves which offered no padding at all.
A decade later when I was competing in the amateurs we sparred with 16oz which should have offered some protection, but didn't.It was only when my mate got some new 12oz sparring gloves that we realised how knackered the bigger ones wore.
I only have little girly hands and when I fought I'd be given some that another fighter had just worn and as well as feeling massive they were full of sweat too.
One night I was given some brand new gloves to fight in and they felt luxurious after those baggy things I was used to.My trainer was telling me to box behind the jab and take the centre of the ring blah blah blah.
I ignored him and just tried to set the left hook up because those gloves felt so comfortable.
Everybody just used 5cm bandages at the time rather than hand wraps that I never saw till I started coaching later on.
PS. A lot of the gloves the likes of Mickey Walker wore were 4 oz, and earlier when Jack Johnson ruled the roost, they were classed as driving gloves.
