Mickey, not looking like his namesake this morning.
Mickey Walker, the Toy Bulldog was a wee bit more threatening and won world titles at Welter and Middle as well as fighting the top light heavies and heavies of the day.

Look at those gloves, not quite bare handed but close. Must have broke a lot of hands back then. Modern gloves actually allow boxers to throw harder as they have little fear of breaking hands or fingers. Boxer dogs look like they took a lot of shots to the face

I think it's the wraps that are vital - preventing torsional injuries to the fingers. Not a lot of room under those 4-ounce jobs for that! 😲🤦
Mickey Turpin does look like one of the great old-school coaches though - respect for that.

Certainly the wrap is crucial but I watched a special on how padded gloves lead to more injuries on opponents.

When I started boxing in 1966 we used horse hair gloves which offered no padding at all.
A decade later when I was competing in the amateurs we sparred with 16oz which should have offered some protection, but didn't.It was only when my mate got some new 12oz sparring gloves that we realised how knackered the bigger ones wore.

I only have little girly hands and when I fought I'd be given some that another fighter had just worn and as well as feeling massive they were full of sweat too.

One night I was given some brand new gloves to fight in and they felt luxurious after those baggy things I was used to.My trainer was telling me to box behind the jab and take the centre of the ring blah blah blah.
I ignored him and just tried to set the left hook up because those gloves felt so comfortable.
Everybody just used 5cm bandages at the time rather than hand wraps that I never saw till I started coaching later on.
PS. A lot of the gloves the likes of Mickey Walker wore were 4 oz, and earlier when Jack Johnson ruled the roost, they were classed as driving gloves.

A kid in our club broke his hand on a national association of boys clubs championships one night.
He was only 14 and his opponent was as muscular as an adult.
DS boxed Mr Muscles head off and only at the end of the fight did he moan about his hand and didn't go to hospital till the day after.
Not clenching your fist properly can lead to hand problems.
I've got arthritis in my left wrist and in the fingers of both hands and I'm sure boxing played it's part.

I like the Mickey Turpin tag 👍

My mate and ever present treat seeking Westie, Jackson. Seen here alternating hopeful glances between me and the missus.

Fiona on the other hand, could care less….

Cool coaching gotta be great. I also apologize for the thread drift just boxing was always a “fun” hobby for me. I head to the casinos whenever they have a good match. I find cats to have excellent natural boxing skills. Damn I hope I have a good pic of Rocky to tie in my apology. By the way I admitted the other day I went home early Tuesday I think when a female patient went nuts and I caught one of her wild flailing unaimed punches to some post op ribs that are still fragile. She apologized once she regained control but I think my boxing for fun days may be behind me. Oh well.

The last good day Polo had.
The look of pleasure on his face when he jumped in the mud is something we'll never forget.
He was "talking" to people in the pub later and they couldn't believe he had a brain tumour.
