Honest opinion: Is wearing a Speedmaster like being branded as part of a herd?

If you ask me, Speedmasters are like 911s. Some people buy them because they want to be seen with them, but lots of people buy them because they're special examples of their types despite their ubiquity.

No, it does not.

But I still like wearing one.

If I have a speedy, I believe I belong to a special group of people who know their watches and spend their dough on good old fashion watches and not on flavour of the day aka AP or hublot

Since we are being honest...it depends...in my case....yes.

So I sold mine.

I may get another one but that will be when it sings to me louder than other great choices around. And I do think it's a great watch and design, but then I get a little bored with it.

Plenty of nice things around, why settle?

Interesting that you say that. I feel that in this aspect the Speedmaster replaced the Submariner.

To each his own. The Sub didn't replace the speedy, nor did nay of them replace the speedy. What I am saying is I got more pleasure out of wearing other watches, such as the ones posted, so I saw no reason to keep the speedy.

More like identifying you as part of an elite force, like Navy Seals, SAS or, er, the Mexican Marines.

Please.... next thing you know you're going to say it's a military watch.

There are quartz models. Members here, particularly Archer and STANDY, bust my stones about them often.

Why does the one on the right look like the first quartz/led watch I got for Christmas of 1977. Oh yeah, they all looked that way. Memories............

That ok, you guys hog the Speedmasters, I guess I will be content with all the rest. Ok if the funds magically appeared, I would join the heard, team, group, club, gang or whatever you call it.

No, just speaking about me...not extending it to the rest of the world.

After La Marina had "explained" what personal space was, the helicopter pilots were keen to not have anything "explained" to them ever again.

As someone that lives in a place with a fair number of nice watches, Omegas are rare and I've never seen a Speedmaster outside an Omega event.

I do agree with @abrod520 its an iconic piece of industrial design like the 911. My personal esthetic runs towards classic well designed pieces that are also functional. This runs from clothing to cars to watches. Any of these alone are nice and people wear them but I'm not doing it for the brand name. I wish my car did not have the brand stigma attached to it. I purchased it as I feel it's one of the best all around driving cars with useable seating and cargo space and still a hoot to drive on the track.

None of the "baller" watches appeal to me. Even the Rolex that I like are understated models that the majority of Rolex buyers would pass on like the 1655. Although I will admit simple basic clean Panari sometimes speak to me, and a simple Parek dress watch is just perfect. But again the brand names on those are somewhat of a turn off for me. I like the rugged tool nature on the Panari, and the perfection of design on the basic Pateks.
