39mm? WTF?

Why? Why not keep the size? They did with the reissue.

They had the case on hand, from the Calibre 18 Telemeter model. The reissue ended production more than a decade and a half ago.

These Hodinkee Limited Editions are usually based in a company's existing case designs (see the Zenith) with a unique dial and other features. This one's actually pretty legit, customizing the DD chrono module with just one 30-min counter plus a date.

Not my style, but a darn good looking watch. Well done IMHO.

My guess is maybe a Bund reissue?
I suspect that will never happen. TAG seem to have an odd relationship with that particular model of watch. I've never seen it mentioned in any of the company publicity or history. Jack Heuer in his autobiography never mentions it either. Doubly odd given it's one of their better known models, a pilots watch, with flyback function, has "military" history to it(all big marketing points. The ad copy near writes itself), was one of their most produced watch models and with the military contract meant consistent cashflow for those times they needed it, which was often in the late 60's through the 70's.

Maybe the German defence forces have an exclusivity contract with the design? Though they produced the watch for other militaries and civilian examples exist. Maybe because it was a bought in design when they absorbed Leonidas, they didn't feel it was "one of theirs"? Even when the BUND sold off a large number of them in the 90's they did so through Sinn, not through TAG Heuer. I always found it puzzling and interesting in equal measure. 😀

Really good looking watch, although the pricing seems a little steep. If anybody on here grabbed one, looking forward to the first impressions.

I doubt it too, I just threw out the idea since it seemed like something Hodinkee would do. I wasn't super far off I think (right about the TAG Heuer bit) in that they did choose to re-issue / re-imagine one of the funky outliers in Heuer's history.

I suppose you're right. With so few being made... it was the only way. But it still annoys me. Even if it was a necessity.

$6 k for what is essentially a Sellita SW300 + a simplified DD 2223 chrono module. (Discredit to TAG because that's the MSRP set to the benchmark Cal 18)

...granted wrapped inside a beautiful exterior, designed decades ago, re-executed today. (Credit to Hodinkee, and the individual who brought this rare design to their attention)

Sold out within the hour.

In the meantime, some poor watchmaking student is diligently and passionately finishing his first tourbillion, which will likely never get sold....(unless he gets featured somewhere on these websites)

I actually like the Calibre 18 Telemeter case, it's not too bad. With the crystal it's perhaps a tad thick but the mid-case is elegant and preserves the beautiful classic Carrera lugs. I'm just glad they didn't go with the 42mm Calibre 17 Chronometer case with its disgusting overgrown lugs!

I like it a lot, another watch with a great heritage from a major brand. Love the dial and the nautical look. Would have been pretty much right up my alley (except for the price tag).

One thing that does bug me: am I correct in thinking that there is no running seconds hand on this watch? Is the orange hand the chronograph seconds or running seconds?

LOL. The $6k price tag (PLUS TAX BTW?) makes no sense IMO. For that kind of money...

They know their audience. This is a direct quote from the advertisement page on their website:

The typical HODINKEE reader holds a master’s degree or higher, browses from his professional office, earns more than $200,000 per year, owns seven watches, and purchases, on average, three watches per year with an average value of $7,000 or higher per watch.

$6 grand is pocket change to many HODINKEE readers.

I wonder where some of that data comes from. I can't recall ever filling out a survey (or being asked).
I believe sometimes when they hold events, they ask for your information in order to attend, but most events are held in NYC and that would skew the data upwards heavily.
Also, I am sure there are many mega millionaires and even billionaires that read, so that would also bring up the average.

Nice but too much money and I can't get with any dial asymmetry. Even date windows bug me. Love hearing people's views though.

Sorry, but that particular bit about their readers is the single biggest piece of bullshit on the internet. It has been quoted several times, but nowhere have I seen it contested. IMO, it's either a completely made up figure from the Hodinkee bloggers themselves or a result of an online survey where all the sad, insecure hipsters on the site have tried outdoing each other in PhD claims, CEO titles and million dollar income fantasies.
